Are you an experienced, time‑served Instrumentation or Control Systems Engineer who enjoys hands‑on, site‑based engineering work? We are looking for a Systems and Applications Engineer to join our UK regional customer support teams covering the UK and Ireland.
Company Overview
Valmet (Automation Systems Business Line) provides total power plant and process automation as well as controls and measurement solutions for the paper making industry, among others. These solutions utilize Valmet’s high technology DCS, QCS, Analysers and Measurements, Information Management and Machine Condition Monitoring Systems. Reporting to the Area Service Manager, your office will be located in Warrington, Cheshire (remote working possible depending on a case‑by‑case basis). We are particularly interested in experienced engineers from the pulp & paper, energy, process, minerals or allied industries who have built their career through apprenticeships, maintenance or field support roles and are happy to continue working in a hands‑on engineering position.
Responsibilities
You will adhere to regulatory and Company health, safety and environmental policy and, as this is a customer‑facing role, you will be required to positively influence the Valmet reputation by displaying a professional dedication toward customer service. You will be involved in the delivery of projects, maintenance and breakdown services to Valmet’s UK installed base customers within the Paper Making, Power Generation, Process industries, Minerals and the Marine sectors. While primarily employed to look after Valmet’s growing installed base in your North West England region, you may need to travel within the UK and occasionally within the EU, resulting in time away from home. You will provide routine and on‑demand customer service including software development and documentation, maintenance / inspection of automation systems, and periodic out‑of‑hours on‑call emergency support.
Required Skills
- Be a time‑served, hands‑on engineer, ideally apprenticeship trained, with at least 5 years’ practical experience in industrial instrumentation, measurement or control environments.
- Be comfortable working on site, in plant environments, carrying out maintenance and fault‑finding on live systems.
- Be confident using hand tools to remove, repair and replace system components.
- Understand:
- Electrical circuits and fault diagnosis
- Pneumatic circuits and instrumentation
- Analogue and digital signal transmission and troubleshooting
- How measurements affect process performance
- The importance of accuracy and reliability
- Basic PID control principles (single loop / cascade awareness)
Additional Qualifications
- Practical working knowledge of industrial automation systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA, HMI) from a maintenance or field support perspective.
- Experience with online and offline analysers in industrial process environments.
- HNC / HND or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
- Experience identifying improvement or service opportunities during site work.
- Experience producing clear and accurate service / maintenance documentation.
