The Opportunity

We are supporting an established organisation operating within the energy and commodities trading market as it strengthens its Trading Technology function.

This is a senior leadership position responsible for managing and developing an established team of Business Analysts working across complex trading technology, ETRM and business-change programmes.

The successful person must bring a strong technical understanding of energy trading and ETRM platforms.

However, this is not purely a hands-on Business Analyst position.

The priority is finding someone who can lead people, improve capability and ensure consistently high standards of analysis across the team.

You will provide direction, coaching and performance management while retaining enough technical credibility to challenge requirements, guide solution design and engage confidently with senior Trading, Risk and Technology stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Directly manage, coach and develop a team of experienced Business Analysts.
  • Set objectives, conduct performance reviews and support individual career development.
  • Build a strong and consistent Business Analysis capability across Trading Technology.
  • Establish and improve BA standards, tools, governance and ways of working.
  • Allocate work effectively across the team, balancing business priorities and delivery capacity.
  • Review and challenge requirements, process designs, user stories and other BA outputs.
  • Ensure knowledge is shared across the team and does not sit with individual subject-matter experts.
  • Support the recruitment and development of additional Business Analysts when required.
  • Work closely with senior Trading, Risk, Operations and Technology stakeholders.
  • Translate complex commercial, operational and regulatory requirements into clear technology deliverables.
  • Support major ETRM and trading-platform transformation programmes.
  • Oversee technology change relating to new products, markets and trading capabilities.
  • Partner with Project Managers, Developers, Architects and third-party technology providers.
  • Manage competing priorities between Trading, Risk and Technology teams.
  • Ensure technology solutions are controlled, sustainable and aligned with wider business objectives.
  • What We Are Looking For
  • Proven experience directly line-managing and developing Business Analysts.
  • Strong examples of coaching individuals, improving performance and building team capability.
  • Previous hands-on experience as a Business Analyst within energy trading, commodities or a comparable trading environment.
  • Strong understanding of ETRM platforms and their role within a trading organisation.
  • Experience with platforms such as Open Link Endur, Allegro, Right Angle, Aspect or another comparable ETRM solution.
  • Good knowledge of front, middle and back-office trading processes.
  • Understanding of the end-to-end trade lifecycle, including trade capture, position management, risk, confirmations, settlement and reporting.
  • Experience delivering complex Trading IT or technology-enabled business-change programmes.
  • The ability to review and challenge technical and functional requirements without needing to personally deliver every piece of analysis.
  • Experience working with technology vendors or third-party platform providers would be beneficial.
  • Strong senior stakeholder-management skills, particularly across Trading, Risk and Technology.
  • The confidence to challenge constructively and remain effective within a fast-moving environment.
  • The Important Distinction

This role will not suit someone whose experience is limited to being the most senior hands-on Business Analyst on a project.

We are specifically looking for someone who has taken formal responsibility for a BA team, including:

  • Line management
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Performance management
  • Work allocation
  • Capability development
  • Quality assurance
  • BA standards and governance
  • Building a high-performing and collaborative team

Technical knowledge is essential, particularly across ETRM and energy-trading processes, but success in this role will be measured by the performance and development of the wider Business Analysis team.

Personal Qualities

The successful person is likely to be

  • A credible and supportive people leader.
  • Collaborative, pragmatic and comfortable bringing different teams together.
  • Robust enough to challenge senior stakeholders constructively.
  • Able to balance the commercial urgency of Trading with Risk controls and sustainable technology delivery.
  • Flexible in their approach rather than overly rigid or process-driven.
  • Comfortable operating between business and technology teams.
  • Focused on achieving outcomes through others rather than personally owning every deliverable.
  • What’s on Offer
  • Performance-related bonus of approximately 15–20%, based on company and individual performance.
  • Market-leading pension contribution.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Permanent senior leadership opportunity.
  • Hybrid working, with regular attendance at a London office.
  • The opportunity to shape an established Business Analysis function.
  • Involvement in a major multi-year trading-platform and ETRM transformation.
  • Exposure to technology change supporting new products and international-market expansion.
