An established player in the UK energy market is looking for a motivated and ambitious Power Shift Trader to join their growing trading desk. This role is ideal for junior to mid-level professionals who want to build a career in short-term power trading, working directly with real-time UK market dynamics.

You’ll help manage intraday positions, execute trades, and identify opportunities in the GB market, gaining exposure to a fast-paced environment with excellent career progression.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and optimise trades in the UK short-term and intraday power markets.
  • Monitor National Grid ESO balancing actions, renewable generation forecasts, and demand-supply fluctuations to capture opportunities.
  • Manage the UK portfolio in real-time while adhering to risk and compliance limits.
  • Coordinate with National Grid, market operators (EPEX, Nord Pool), and internal teams for nominations and scheduling.
  • Provide analysis and insight to support trading strategy development.
  • Contribute to daily PnL reporting and trade performance reviews.
  • Work on a rotational shift pattern to ensure round-the-clock market coverage.

Qualifications

  • 1–4 years of experience in energy trading, short-term power, or a related role (e.g. optimisation, operations, or analytics).
  • Knowledge of the UK power market, including trading platforms and balancing mechanisms.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to make fast, accurate decisions under pressure.
  • Proficiency in Excel; Python, VBA, or SQL skills are an advantage.
  • Strong communicator and team player, able to thrive in a shift-based environment.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and eager to develop within a trading role.
