Purpose of the Role

To create, check, and approve cable design services with a strong focus on technical excellence and right-first-time delivery.

The role involves delivering and monitoring projects in line with programme schedules, budgets, and customer expectations while collaborating effectively with the wider engineering team.

The successful candidate will have 3–5+ years of relevant experience and the ability to deliver, check, and approve a broad range of design work.

The role requires the use and interpretation of technical standards, critical review of design deliverables, mentoring of junior engineers, and leadership in technical problem-solving discussions.

A sound understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and customer satisfaction is also essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use industry-standard software to produce, develop, check, and approve engineering designs based on project requirements.
  • Plan and utilise engineering resources and software tools to deliver detailed and accurate technical documentation.
  • Consider electrical clearances, geology, structural modifications, upgrades, maintenance, construction, and temporary works in all designs.
  • Produce, check, and approve design inputs and outputs in line with statutory regulations, CDM requirements, and industry-specific standards.
  • Identify and implement current best practices within cable design activities.
  • Interpret and deliver work in accordance with project programmes and milestones.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to facilitate successful project delivery.
  • Review and scrutinise technical notes and drawings while considering CDM requirements and client technical standards.
  • Identify amendments to technical drawings and documentation, providing constructive feedback and implementing lessons learned into future work.
  • Assess technical risks and constraints during project handovers, including technical limitations, budgets, timelines, reputational considerations, and internal/external risks.
  • Ensure all work produced by self and team members meets required quality standards.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and leadership to junior engineers and less experienced team members.
  • Contribute to wider business functions including resourcing, forecasting, budgeting, and delivery planning.
  • Monitor progress and proactively escalate delivery risks to senior stakeholders.
  • Support the development of junior engineers through technical reviews and constructive feedback.
  • Mentor team members in line with individual development goals and organisational objectives.
  • Lead and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing forums and technical discussions.
  • Maintain accurate project records and provide reporting as required.
  • Support additional business activities and responsibilities as required.

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartership
  • Knowledge & Experience

  • Cable Design experience
  • Production of industry-specific construction documentation/materials
  • Proficiency in CYMCAP, ELEK, and/or Cableizer software
  • Experience working within project teams delivering against complex time and budget constraints
  • Ability to work autonomously to deadlines while escalating concerns appropriately
  • Experience within power, utilities, telecoms, or related infrastructure sectors
  • Only candidates based in UK and eligible to work in UK are allowed
