The predicted salary is between 36000 - 60000 £ per year.

The applicant will be expected to assist with the following duties under the direct supervision of a member of the Vacuum Group. Training for specific duties and processes will be provided by the Vacuum Group.

  • Electrical vacuum equipment inspection, handling and inventory checking.
  • Inspection and checking of pre-assembly equipment.
  • Functional testing of assembled vacuum equipment.
  • Vacuum bakeout (conditioning) of vacuum components to UHV conditions.
  • Assist with installation of the vacuum components covering different locations on site.
  • Assisting with commissioning and testing of installed vacuum systems.
  • Must be able to work in accordance with all Vacuum Group QA documentation and procedures.

The key duties of the post are as follows:

  • To participate in the conditioning, testing, installation and commissioning of the vacuum systems.
  • To utilise effectively the quality control and quality procedures of the project.
  • To work within a clean room environment (ISO 7 standard Class 10000).
  • To undertake other related duties to meet the needs of the Vacuum Group.

Qualifications and Experience

Honours degree (or equivalent or higher qualification) in Physics, or an appropriate branch of another Physical Science, Mathematics or Engineering. The successful applicant is likely to have the following skills and experience:

  • Effective team worker.
  • Self-motivated and an enthusiastic worker.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Good communication skills: verbal/written.
  • Quality Control Systems, Work Planning and Safe Systems of work.
  • High degree of computer literacy including MS Office.
  • Practical experience and ability with vacuum or general physics instrumentation and electronics, interfacing, debugging and fault-finding.
  • Demonstrable relevant experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Physics of ultra-high vacuum or accelerator vacuum systems.
  • Industrial or accelerator control systems.
  • Practical experience and ability with commissioning, operation and troubleshooting of control instrumentation.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with vacuum systems would be an advantage.
  • Flexible approach to the working conditions and environment.
  • Experience working in a high technology, or Ultra High Vacuum environment.
  • Linux operating system experience.
