The role will contribute to the Vale of Glamorgan Hearing Support Service within the LA’s Learning and Skills ALN Directorate. The Hearing Support team works across the Vale of Glamorgan with children and young people from birth to 25. In the first instance, the role will be primarily based in the secondary Hearing Resource Base at St Cyres School, Penarth with additional responsibilities for an outreach caseload that may include working in settings across the county. You would be part of an enthusiastic, forward thinking and supportive team who are passionate about providing a high quality service for deaf/Deaf children and young people.
About The Role
- 2 days per week (13 hours)
- Temporary position until September 2027, with the possibility of becoming full time and permanent.
- TMS / UPS.
- An ALN Allowance will be paid for an applicant holding the Teacher of the Deaf Mandatory Qualification or on completion of the two year training course.
- The role will be based in the Hearing Resource Base at St Cyres School, Penarth in the first instance and at Cogan Primary when required.
The successful candidate will also contribute to the Hearing Support team’s outreach work with a designated caseload. The successful applicant will join and support a team of highly experienced and enthusiastic Teachers of the Deaf, to deliver outstanding teaching and support to pupils attending the Hearing Resource Base at St Cyres School alongside managing an assigned caseload of deaf/Deaf children and young people in family homes and educational settings. They will need to be passionate about promoting full inclusion for deaf/Deaf children and young people in all aspects of school life and beyond and ensuring that deafness is not a barrier to reaching their full potential. The role involves supporting pupils with hearing loss to access the curriculum using a variety of communication approaches and enabling them to be fully involved in all aspects of school life, within the Resource Base and in other educational settings across the county. The successful candidate will be expected to work with children and young people with hearing loss from birth to 25.
About You
- Understanding of the different educational and social needs of children and young people with hearing loss including those with extra learning disabilities and a passion for mitigating the impacts of hearing loss on learning
- Recent experience of working with children in a secondary school setting; capable of supporting and teaching deaf/Deaf children and young people across all curriculum areas
- Experience of supporting families with pre‑school children
- Ability to work flexibly, and as part of a team in a variety of settings
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
- Good analytical and problem‑solving skills
- Able to work independently and use initiative
- A commitment to ongoing CPD and training including updating specialist skills
- Understanding of the Curriculum for Wales and ability to promote pupils’ independent learning
- Understanding and experience of working with the ALN Code for Wales and the PCP and IDP processes
- Excellent planning and organisational skills
- The ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders and experience of working with a range of other professionals
- An understanding of how to track pupils’ achievements, write targets and make judgements about progress
- Teacher of the Deaf Mandatory qualification. For applicants who do not hold this qualification there would be a requirement to undertake a two‑year programme of study (a combination of online and residential learning)
- BSL Level 1 (minimum) and a commitment to further developing BSL skills. For applicants who do not hold BSL qualifications there would be a requirement to achieve at least Level 1 within the first year of taking the post
- Welsh language skills – able to support deaf/Deaf children in Welsh medium settings
