St Athan Primary is a one form entry primary school with a nursery. Our school building is a single-story structure built in 1967 and has been well maintained over the years. A fire in February 2025 caused extensive damage to one wing of the school and rebuilding work has just begun to replace this space; in the meantime, a modern demountable structure is being utilised.

Originally being a much larger school, we are fortunate to have adequate space for community rooms and breakout areas for children who have difficulty regulating their behaviour. The school grounds are extensive with a large playing field and playgrounds, and a well-established outdoor learning area.

The school was originally built to accommodate the children from St Athan and the surrounding villages and the children from RAF St Athan, which at the time was one of the biggest training camps in the country. The numbers of military children have fallen in recent years, but we still have a large contingent of Army children and a transient population of children from the ex-MOD houses, of which many are social housing or buy to lets. This does bring its challenges; we currently have 28% of pupils eligible for free school meals.

Our vision is to nurture confident, curious and resilient learners within a happy, caring and ambitious community, where children and adults are valued, supported and inspired to succeed together.

We are proud to offer:

  • a warm, welcoming learning community with a strong family feel and values rooted in care, respect, inclusion and academic achievement;
  • happy, confident and enthusiastic children who are eager to learn and proud of their school;
  • a dedicated, skilled and highly supportive staff team, committed to continual improvement;
  • a proactive and supportive Governing Body;
  • a strong partnership with parents and an enthusiastic Parents’ Teacher Association and wider community;
  • rich learning opportunities, an embedded curriculum including strong outdoor learning provision;
  • an attractive rural setting with good transport links.
