The Highway Maintenance team are responsible for ensuring all adopted drainage assets are regularly inspected and cleansed, therefore we are looking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced driver within the team to undertake these works using a JCB vehicle specifically for clearing of highway surface water grips, open channels, soft verges, and the occasional fly tipped material.
The driver will be required to specifically liaise with internal colleagues, members of public and Councillors to ensure good communication throughout, whilst ensuring the highway surface water network is thoroughly cleansed and free flowing, with any defects being identified for further works being recorded on hand held devices for further action.

About The Role
Pay Details: Grade 5, SCP 8-12, £26,824 – £28,598
(With temporary market forces supplement £31,067)
Hours of Work / Working Pattern: 37hrs / 52 weeks
Main Place of Work: Alps Depot and various sites throughout Vale of Glamorgan
Description:The Vale of Glamorgan Council has approx. 21,000 surface water gullies that we are responsible for maintaining and the construction operative role will primarily be required to attend site each day in a JCB machine and ensure any exposed surface water outlets, open grips, channel assets are safe, regularly maintained, and free of obstructions.
The candidate will also be required to work closely with other Council employees to undertake this role and ensure daily vehicle checks are completed. The candidate will also be responsible for suitable Chapter 8 signs and barriers are used whilst on working on site to ensure safe working practices.
About You
You will need:
- Highway maintenance or highway engineering experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience driving LGV vehicles (JCB essential)
- Good communication skills both written and verbal
- Practical attitude for dealing with complaints
- Self-motivated and the ability to motivate and communicate effectively with staff and members of the Public
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a busy environment.
- Able to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and able to carry out all manual tasks
- Ability to drive/travel throughout the Vale or between locations as appropriate.
