Maintenance Officer – Vale of Glamorgan Council
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is looking for a Maintenance Officer to manage and maintain surface water assets across the council area. The role involves inspecting gates and drainage assets, coordinating works, supervising contractors, and engaging with stakeholders to ensure a safe and well‑maintained public highway network.
Pay Details
Grade 7 spinal point 20‑25 – £32,597 – £36,363
Hours of Work / Working Pattern
37 hours per week / 52 weeks per year
Main Place of Work
Alps Depot, Wenvoe
Responsibilities
- Attend site and ensure surface water assets are safe, regularly maintained and free of obstructions.
- Use specialist plant and drivers to clear rural assets under suitable Chapter 8 traffic management.
- Engage with stakeholders when coordinating works on the adopted highway in accordance with the Highways Act 1980 and Traffic Management Act 2004.
- Supervise other highway maintenance works undertaken by in‑house teams or contractors.
- Investigate, solve and supervise drainage/ditching works across the Vale of Glamorgan.
- Assist with the ongoing development of the Neighbourhood Services asset management systems.
- Manage the Council’s non‑illuminated street furniture assets (bollards, benches, bus shelters) and arrange maintenance works where required.
Qualifications & Capability
- Highway maintenance or highway engineering technical experience.
- Organised and methodical with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to understand service drawings and drainage survey plans, and coordinate works.
- Practical attitude for dealing with complaints from all parties.
- Self‑motivated with the ability to motivate and communicate effectively with staff and the public.
- Knowledge of engineering practices, the Highways Act (1980) and the New Roads and Street Works Act (1991).
- Good geographical understanding of the Vale of Glamorgan.
- Ability to attend site meetings and represent the Council to ensure the drainage network is well maintained.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a busy environment.
- Capability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
- Dexterity in delegating and prioritising own workload.
- Ability to drive/travel throughout the Vale or between locations as appropriate.
