The Technical Advisor – Well Control provides expert well engineering support with respect to well construction and design and in particular well control risks. Acts as an internal independent Technical Authority for Well Control matters related to well operations.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfills role as internal well engineering subject matter expert and advisor.
  • Reviews and provides independent expert opinion on client well programs and operations to ensure compliance with the company, regulatory, industry and client requirements.
  • Evaluates and approves deviations from the company Well Control standard and manual.
  • Provides technical support to Operations and other departments in the company with respect to well control and engineering related issues, including Management of Change (MOC) process, risk assessments, bridging documents, contracts, investigations, etc.
  • Where required, reviews and assesses client's drilling plans/well design basis, and risk assessments.
  • Supports well control incidents and other well related investigations to identify lessons learned, assess the effectiveness of the Valaris Well Control Standard, and evaluate whether any changes to the standard are warranted.
  • Compiles and distributes lessons learned reports and develops and implements any necessary changes to the Well Control Standard.
  • Represents the company in discussions with clients regarding well-control and well engineering issues, activities, problems, etc.
  • Participates in the after-action review (AAR) with key stakeholders.
  • Conducts and participates in Well Control oversight activities, including offshore site visits.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of well control competency and training process.
  • Maintains the company’s Well Control Standard, including policy, practices, procedures, equipment specifications and testing requirements.
  • Monitors and implements technologies, industry standards and industry best practices.
  • Participates and represents the company in industry standards setting organizations/committees such as ABS, IADC and API and at meetings with government agencies such as BSEE, USCG, DOI, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree or PhD in a well or petroleum engineering related discipline preferred or recognised industry development program.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in offshore well construction and design.
  • Formal development training and practical experience in the design and construction of offshore wells both deepwater (subsea BOPs) and shelf (surface BOPs), preferably with an operator.
  • Understanding of the operations of all types of offshore drilling rigs.
  • Extensive experience in the use of (and preferably development of) well control and well construction related software applications.
  • Supervisor Level Well Control certification and range of formal Advanced Well Control and Unconventional Drilling Technology training.
  • Offshore survival and medical certificates as mandated by government regulations.
  • Deep knowledge, skills and experience to act as an internal advisor and subject matter expert in well engineering and well control matters.
  • A strong technical reputation within the oil and gas drilling.
  • Demonstrably strong background with deep understanding in managed pressure drilling and other non-conventional offshore drilling technologies.
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
  • Availability and willingness to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
  • Committed to a high standard of safety and to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules.
  • Must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Effective communication, teamwork, organizational skills and good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills and be able to diplomatically and constructively handle confrontation.
