VAT / Indirect Tax Advisory Manager Description: Vaisto Recruitment is working in partnership with a top 60 accountancy practice in their search for VAT Manager to join their expanding VAT Division in central London. This is a newly created role which will work alongside the VAT Director, to support the firm's continued growth and development.
You will be a commercially minded VAT Manager, who will act as first point of contact for clients, taking ownership of complex VAT matters, managing a diverse portfolio of OMB’s and large corporates across a variety of sectors, building long‑term trusted client relationships alongside managing, supporting and training junior VAT team members.
Key Responsibilities- Be the go‑to VAT expert for your client portfolio, building strong, influential relationships and delivering high‑impact, commercially focused advice.
- Lead on complex, high‑stakes VAT matters, using legislation, case law, and HMRC guidance to provide clear, strategic solutions that clients can rely on.
- Champion clients in HMRC enquiries and disputes, crafting persuasive technical arguments and confidently defending positions to secure the best outcomes.
- Own the quality and accuracy of VAT work, ensuring exceptional compliance, robust audit trails, and a consistently high standard of delivery across all engagements.
- Spot risks and opportunities early, taking the lead on technically challenging matters and involving the VAT Director where strategic escalation is needed.
- Drive business development, engaging with new enquiries, identifying growth opportunities, and supporting internal, cross‑group referrals that strengthen the AMS offering.
- Lead, mentor, and inspire junior team members, delivering training, reviewing work, and helping shape the next generation of VAT specialists.
- Stay ahead of the VAT landscape, monitoring legislative changes and emerging HMRC positions, and contributing to thought leadership across internal and external platforms.
- Build strong working relationships with HMRC and external advisors, ensuring communication is strategic, professional, and aligned with client objectives.
- Enhance internal VAT processes, maintaining central query logs and supporting knowledge‑sharing to drive consistency and excellence across the team.
- Deliver high‑level VAT advisory support to internal stakeholders and clients, grounding your recommendations in strong legal analysis and commercial insight.
- Lead on ECNs, Pre‑Creds, and non‑statutory clearance requests, ensuring submissions are technically robust, persuasive, and well‑evidenced.
- Engage with senior leadership, providing clear updates on client matters, risks, and emerging technical issues.
- Represent AMS at networking events, seminars, and industry briefings, strengthening your profile and keeping the team plugged into the latest VAT developments.
- Act as the senior point of contact for DIY Housebuilder Claims, ensuring smooth management and exceptional client service.
- Strong technical grounding in UK VAT legislation, case law, and HMRC processes with CTA or expertise based on significant experience, or legal background.
- Significant, hands‑on VAT experience gained within an accountancy practice or specialist tax environment, including advisory work, complex technical queries, and client‑facing delivery.
- Proven ability to manage and grow client relationships, acting as the first point of contact, building trust, and delivering commercially focused VAT solutions.
- Demonstrable experience handling HMRC enquiries and disputes, with the confidence to present well‑reasoned arguments and defend technical positions under pressure.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to interpret legislation, identify risks, and provide clear, strategic recommendations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of explaining complex VAT concepts in a clear, engaging, and client‑friendly way.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior team members, contributing to their development and helping to maintain high technical standards across the team.
- Highly organised and detail‑driven, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines, maintain robust audit trails, and ensure consistent compliance.
- Commercial awareness, with the ability to spot opportunities, support business development, and contribute to the growth of the VAT service line.
