This is a newly created role, born out of sustained growth rather than replacement, offering a genuine chance to shape a position around your own strengths and career direction. You'll join a Manchester tax team that has grown five-fold in seven years, working across a genuine mix of corporate and personal tax, compliance and advisory. The firm has remained independent for decades, with no intention of changing that. Because the role is newly created, there's real flexibility to shape it around your background and where you want your tax career to go next.
This role is ideal for a Tax Manager who:
- Has trained at a Top 10, 20 or 30 firm and is looking to broaden into a more rounded tax role, or has come from an accounts background and understands how financial statements are built.
- Wants to work across both corporate and personal tax, compliance and advisory, rather than being confined to a single specialism.
- Is looking for the stability and culture of an independently owned firm, with the technical variety usually reserved for much larger groups.
This is a well-established, independently owned firm of chartered accountants based in central Manchester, with a tax team of around 20 people. The firm has grown steadily and deliberately over several decades and has firmly ruled out being absorbed by one of the larger consolidators - independence is core to how it operates and how it treats its people.
The tax team has grown significantly over the last few years, and advisory work continues to grow. The firm is looking to recruit a Manager who can manage a mixed corporate/personal portfolio and play a key role in the team's next phase of growth.
Responsibilities
- Manage a mixed portfolio of corporate and personal tax clients, spanning compliance and advisory work.
- Ensure deadlines, quality standards and HMRC compliance are consistently met across your portfolio.
- Provide clear, practical advice to owner-managed businesses, corporates and private clients.
- Get involved in advisory and planning projects as your experience and interests develop.
- Build long-term relationships that go beyond compliance delivery.
- Oversee and support graduate trainees and intermediate staff within your team.
- Share technical knowledge with colleagues moving between accounts and tax disciplines.
- Contribute to the continued growth and shaping of the wider tax function.
Requirements
- ACA / ACCA / CTA qualified (or equivalent).
- Strong background in corporate tax, ideally with an understanding of how financial statements are prepared (an accounts background is welcomed).
- Experience with groups, larger clients and more complex tax matters (loss relief, QIPs) would be beneficial.
- Comfortable working across both compliance and advisory work.
- Prior experience at a Top 10, 20 or 30 firm, or a similarly structured practice, is an advantage.
Benefits
- Salary: c.£52,000 – £58,000, depending on experience.
- Benefits: Competitive package with hybrid working.
- Progression: Genuine scope to grow within a team that has expanded five-fold over the last seven years, in a firm committed to remaining independent.
