The Role

Reporting directly to the Senior Buyer, this position works closely with the V&A Commercial Rights team, advising Buyers and Merchandisers on third-party asset use in bespoke product development for sale within the V&A shops, ensuring a joined-up approach to wider third-party rights clearance.

Responsibilities

  • To manage third-party rights clearance for V&A merchandise and product development, in line with wider range-planning strategy and timelines, working closely with V&A Commercial Rights team.
  • To uphold and develop V&A Rights Clearance practice and protocol, and their application in relation to merchandise, in collaboration with Senior Buyer.
  • To build and maintain commercially successful, mutually beneficial working relationships with third-party rights holders on behalf of the V&A.
  • To draft, progress and manage contract negotiation for retail development and use of content licensed from third parties.
  • To work closely with Merchandising team to assist third-party financial administration, set-up and communication of royalty and other contract term obligations.
  • To work closely with Buying team to establish optimal image selection for specific range and product briefs, working within planned asset lists to advise on risk management regarding choices and uses.
  • To ensure the necessary permissions are acquired (e.g. copyright, credits, other IP) and manage rights data to support commercial product development, and to ensure all use of assets is as agreed, in line with contractual terms.
  • To act as representative of Retail team in discussions with third-party rights holders, negotiating the best deal for the V&A based on commercial and costing requirements of specific product types in coordination with other V&A stakeholders.
  • To advise on legal/commercial risks and relevant copyright law, updating V&A contract templates accordingly and taking part in contract negotiations with third parties in collaboration with Buying team.
  • To develop an excellent working knowledge of V&A collection and to advise on where third-party IP and other rights apply.
  • To consider the appropriate permissions clearance of creative assets and artworks in relation to different formats and products, promotional and marketing contexts.
