The position is within the Grounds & Equipment section of the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at VA Central Western Mass. The incumbent operates and maintains departmental equipment, leads daily operations, and storm response. May work at all six Community Based Outpatient Clinics or tow the Emergency Management trailer throughout New England.

Major Duties include:

  1. Operating heavy equipment such as wheel loaders, backhoes, skid steers, and dump trucks over rough terrain to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth.
  2. Grading surfaces, compacting soils, or rolling to specifications.
  3. Adjusting attachments and operating equipment with skillful maneuvering.
  4. Leading and training staff in equipment operation and storm response.
  5. Maintaining departmental equipment in proper working order.
  6. Possessing and maintaining a valid CDL B or higher license for operating heavy vehicles on public roads.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6:00am – 2:30pm

Physical Requirements: Heavy physical effort, operating in awkward positions, exposure to vibrations and jolting from rough surfaces.

Requirements include: U.S. citizenship, background check, drug testing, valid CDL B or higher, complete application package, and online onboarding.

Qualifications: Demonstrated training or experience showing ability to perform duties. Rated according to OPM standards. Experience can include volunteer work. Full-time work is considered 35-40 hours/week.

Additional info: No formal education requirement. Participation in influenza vaccination program required. Veterans\’ preference rules are waived under direct-hire authority but full consideration is given.
