V7 are working with a leading UK main contractor, recognised for delivering high-quality industrial, logistics, commercial, retail and mixed-use schemes across the country, seeking an experienced Groundworks Quantity Surveyor to join its growing commercial team in Birmingham. With a strong reputation for outstanding customer service, technical expertise and consistent project delivery, this main contractor works alongside industry-leading specialist partners to deliver major schemes across the UK. Due to the scale and complexity of current projects, particularly within large industrial and commercial developments, the business is strengthening its in-house expertise across groundworks packages.

The role: This position has been created to provide dedicated oversight of major groundworks packages across multiple live and pre-construction projects. Groundworks are critical to project success - getting it wrong can make or break the scheme - so you will play a key role in ensuring commercial control, technical accuracy and transparency across all groundworks operations. You will primarily be based in the Birmingham office, working closely with Commercial Managers, while travelling to sites as required. The sites are primarily around the Midlands; however, there are some up North so travel may be required.

In return our client is offering:

  • Competitive salary
  • Company car allowance / EV car scheme
  • Annual bonus
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays (increases with service)
  • 6% Pension contribution
  • Private healthcare
  • Life insurance

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take commercial ownership of large-scale groundworks packages on industrial and commercial schemes
  • Provide detailed input during pre-construction, advising on scope, risks and cost planning for groundworks
  • Review and interrogate subcontractor quotations, volumes and returns
  • Analyse and validate cut & fill models and earthworks quantities
  • Oversee piling, modelling and earthworks operations from a commercial perspective
  • Challenge subcontractors where required — ensuring accuracy, value and transparency
  • Monitor works across multiple sites to ensure commercial integrity and prevent cost discrepancies
  • Work closely with the wider commercial team to ensure groundworks packages are structured and procured correctly

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong experience within groundworks, either: Working for a main contractor managing groundworks packages, or Working for a groundworks subcontractor delivering to main contractor
  • Proven experience on large industrial, logistics or commercial schemes
  • Strong understanding of: Earthworks and cut & fill modelling, Piling and enabling works, Groundworks package build-ups and cost structures
  • Comfortable reviewing subcontractor pricing and challenging discrepancies
  • Commercially astute with strong negotiation skills
  • Willing to travel to sites across the Midlands and Surrounding Regions

Main contractor experience is beneficial but not essential - strong groundworks expertise and the confidence to challenge subcontractors head-on are key. If you’re a Groundworks QS who truly understands how critical early-stage works are to project success and want to take ownership of major packages within a growing contractor, this is an excellent opportunity to make a real impact.
