They currently require End Point Assessors (EPAs) for Apprentices undertaking the Power Industry Substation Fitter standard, to join their bank of Independent End Point Assessors. As an EPA, you will carry out apprentice assessments, including practical observations and technical interviews. You’ll play a vital role in validating skills and knowledge. To work as an EPA for the Power Industry Substation Fitter Standard, you will need to possess up-to-date occupational knowledge and competence.
STANDARD - POWER INDUSTRY SUBSTATION FITTER
Substation fitters work in the power industry for power network owners, operators, or contractors. They work in and around substations. A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system. Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, and other important functions. Between the generating station and consumer, electric power may flow through several substations at different voltage levels. The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) regulates the industry. This is a core and options apprenticeship. An apprentice must be trained and assessed on the core and one option relevant to their role. The options are:
- Option 1. Substation fitter - distribution maintenance
- Option 2. Substation fitter - transmission maintenance
- Option 3. Substation fitter - construction
Substation maintenance fitters inspect, test and maintain substation equipment, earthing and batteries, and carry out repairs. They specialise in distribution or transmission. Distribution maintenance covers systems operating typically between 1,000 - 132,000 volts, whereas transmission maintenance covers systems operating typically between 132,000 - 400,000 volts, with differences in equipment and working procedures.
THE ROLE
The role is offered on a flexible basis via a zero hours contract. The hours available vary dependent on demand, and registered EPAs always have a choice to accept assignments based on their availability. This role may be undertaken complementary to an existing substantive position with the permission of your current employer or within a wider portfolio of activities. Upon taking assignments from the Service Delivery team, you will deliver end-point assessment for the Power Industry Substation Fitter apprenticeship standard and assessment method you are approved for. You will undertake (remotely or directly) end point assessment activities (which may include practical observations and technical interviews), awarding a preliminary grade and ensuring that all assessment decisions are fair, objective, free of bias and based on all relevant evidence presented. You will accurately record the outcomes of all end point assessment activity using assessment material submitting these records within required timescales.
