V.Ships Leisure is looking for a Sommelier on behalf of Silversea Cruises. Responsible to deliver high quality, efficient, individualized and technically excellent wine service in accordance with Company Policies and strictly upholding any Public Health standards towards a goal of achieving total guest satisfaction. Reporting to the Head Sommelier.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively provides a courteous, professional and personalized wine and beverage service.
  • Actively promotes the Company’s premium wine and beverage list.
  • Responsible for increasing wine sales by demonstrating personal attention, consulting guests on fine wine selection, how to pair wine with food.
  • Sets up wine stations in assigned dining outlet.
  • Maintains control of the wine station inventory and consumption.
  • Provides wine service during private cocktail parties and special events.
  • Performs light luggage duty on turn around days.
  • Assists with the regular inventories of the wine cellar and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains assigned area and equipment according to Public Health standards.
  • Executes strict Public Health practices in all aspects of the position.
  • Ensures readiness for any announced or unannounced Public Health inspection.
  • Properly and carefully uses ship equipment and truthfully reports faulty or broken equipment.
  • Strives to minimize breakage and wastage and follows proper procedures when disposing of garbage.
  • Assists managers and supervisors with the training and induction of new personnel.
  • Displays cost and quality awareness.
  • Proactively responds to issues or potential problems quickly and efficiently involving relevant people as required.
  • Communicates any challenges, complaints or service difficulties to immediate supervisor.
  • Attends all training sessions with the aim to further improve performance.
  • Follows the 10 ‘Non-Negotiable’ steps of service at all times.
  • Displays a thorough knowledge of the ships daily activities to be able to advise the guests.
  • Introduction to guests according to Silversea standards.
  • Confidently and professionally engages with guests, using their names at all times.
  • Adherence to the Company’s code of conduct at all times.
  • Assists guests with their general requests/needs in an efficient and prompt manner.
  • Practices preventative maintenance.
  • Keeps the Head Sommelier promptly and fully informed of all problems and matters of significance.
  • Adheres to Standard Operating Procedures set forth by the Company.
  • Incorporates Company service standards, personalized service and sincere hospitality by creating positive experiences for guests.
  • Practices good people management, maintaining proper conduct with all departments around the ship.
  • Observes and enforces uniform and grooming standards according to Company policies.
  • Participates in crew and passenger safety drills according to instructions.
  • Complies with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
  • Participates in all mandatory training.
  • Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
  • Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.

Education/Experience/Qualifications:

  • Valid STCW95 certification.
  • WSET 1 & 2 is required.
  • Extensive wine and bar service experience in an International 5 star operation.
  • New and old World wine knowledge.
  • General knowledge of liquors, brandies, ports etc.
  • Good knowledge of American bar service.
  • Knowledge of Public Health policies and procedures.
  • Physically and medically fit.
  • Moral integrity is required.
  • Excellent fluent English (verbal and written).
  • Conversational in additional languages is considered an asset (German, French, Italian, Spanish, Mandarin).
  • Good working knowledge of Fidelio, POS system and tablet navigation.
