The Master’s primary responsibility must always be the safe navigation and conduct of the ship. In this respect, and regardless of any commercial implications, the Master shall use their judgement and not hesitate to alter course and speed if required by exceptional circumstances. Whilst in command, the Master cannot delegate their ultimate responsibility with regard to making essential decisions concerning crew and ship safety and protection of the environment.
Key Responsibilities
- The Master is responsible for the implementation of Company policies and international requirements relative to navigation, safety, security (including cyber security) and environmental protection.
- Ensuring that all procedures detailed by the Company are correctly carried out, and that all Officers perform correctly their assigned duties regarding safety and environmental protection.
- Reviewing the Company’s policies, procedures and instructions regarding safety and pollution prevention.
- Ensuring compliance with all legislation and regulations affecting the ship’s operation and the interests of those on board.
