  • The Commander is responsible to the Ship Management Office for:
  • The overall command of the vessel
  • Safeguarding, at all times, the interests of the Owner and the Company
  • Maintenance of the vessel and crew certifications necessary for commercial operation
  • Communication with Owners, the Company, Charterers, and any other parties as necessary
  • Maintenance of the vessel and its equipment
  • Ensuring that all crew receive familiarisation training upon boarding the vessel
  • Familiarisation of the crew, performance evaluation, training, welfare, discipline, and other administrative matters as required by VMS Crew Instructions
  • Ensuring that the Emergency Organisation and Emergency Team Responsibilities are known by each crew member, including any training that may be necessary on board
  • Safe navigation of the vessel as required by the Company's navigation procedures and ensuring that all watchkeeping officers are fully familiar with these procedures
  • Organising and conducting Health and Safety committee meetings
  • Ensuring stability, trim, and adequate structural efforts at all times
  • Checking and monitoring any loading plans and operations prepared by the Mate, including supervising loading operations
  • Compliance with any statutory, local, or international regulations affecting the vessel, including MLC 2006
  • Maintenance of onboard files and all records of the Company and others that must be kept or submitted
  • Implementation and recording of onboard training as required by international regulations and VMS
  • Reporting any accident and/or damage affecting the vessel, its crew, or its cargo to the Company and other parties as necessary
  • Complete and accurate control of travel expenses, etc., and the safe custody of the Company's funds
  • Supervision and training of Deck Cadets
  • Ensuring that risk assessment procedures are followed on board and, when necessary, obtaining assistance from the office to mitigate identified risks
  • Requirements for food, hygiene, and payroll of the vessel
  • Review of VMS as required by the ISM Code
  • Through positive leadership, sound management practices, and demonstrating safe behaviours, promote and maintain a safety culture on board
  • Ensuring that each crew member takes personal responsibility for safety, environment, and quality aspects of their own work
  • Responsible for ensuring that adequate health and hygiene standards are maintained throughout the vessel
  • Signing on and off crew members
  • Ensuring compliance with Working Hours and Rest regulations
  • Providing medical assistance on board
  • Ensuring that the onboard complaints procedure is applied as per MLC 2006 and the Company's requirements
  • Enforcing the Company's Drugs and Alcohol policy on board
  • Executing the chartering contract of the vessel in a professional and competent manner
  • Ensuring that there is sufficient fuel (bunkers) and supplies on board before starting a voyage
  • Providing the Chief Engineer and the Mate with relevant details of the intended voyage and ensuring that the voyage orders are understood and fully complied with
  • Providing the Company and charterers with accurate information regarding loading operations
  • Informing the Company when voyage/loading instructions cannot be complied with and/or when they are unclear or not understood
  • Checking and signing loading documents at the end of loading operations
  • Carrying out any other tasks and responsibilities as required by the Company
  • Determining adequate crew levels for respective loading and ballast operations, ensuring that such operations are carried out safely and effectively
  • Ensuring that all cybersecurity policies and procedures are complied with, that cyber incidents are reported, and that all crew are compliant with the Company's cybersecurity requirements
