Additional Requirements
The Officer of Navigation is responsible to the Captain and the Immediate for:
- Maintaining the lifesaving equipment, including the lifeboats of the vessel, ensuring they are always in a state of readiness, according to SOLAS requirements;
- Maintaining all firefighting equipment, including hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus, and extinguishers (including those located in the Engine Room), ensuring they remain constantly ready for use, in accordance with SOLAS;
- Reporting to the Immediate any deficiencies in lifesaving or firefighting equipment that may affect the safe operation of the vessel;
- Maintaining navigation lights, day marks, flags, rigging, and sound signalling devices;
- Maintaining a safe navigation room, as instructed by the Captain;
- Taking command of a mooring team;
- Maintaining the cargo/port room, as instructed by the Immediate;
- Acting as a trainee/substitute for the Second Officer whenever there is an appropriate opportunity;
- Carrying out any other tasks and duties as instructed by the Captain;
- Being provided the opportunity to accompany and train with the Captain whenever possible, including onboard manoeuvring training. Such training should be recorded on form ADM30a and mentioned in your evaluation report.
