Description

Position Summary: Responsible to carry out the daily maintenance and cleaning of engines and mechanical equipment as directed by the Engineer in charge.

Reporting Structure

Reporting to the Staff Engineer and on duty Engineer.

Safety Duties

  1. Participates in crew safety drills according to instructions.
  2. Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
  3. Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
  4. Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  1. Valid STCW 95 certification.
  2. Valid ASE Certification A-III/5.
  3. Good knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, operation and maintenance of vessel machinery and mechanical equipment.
  4. Experience with stripping engines down and rebuilding.
  5. Experience on vessels in an equivalent position.
  6. Physically and medically fit.
  7. Moral integrity is required.

Language requirements: Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in the Engine Control Room, Engine spaces with noise, light traffic, distracting environments.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Performs major and specialised mechanical overhaul and repair work to determine the need for further repairs or adjustments.
  2. Repairs and maintains hydraulic equipment and valves.
  3. Prevents spares and tools from being damaged due to poor handling.
  4. Provides installation and breakdown services.
  5. To be part of the technical loading team during intake of provisions.
  6. To provide technical assistance during the ship’s tendering operations.
  7. Assists with general maintenance (to include but not limited to the following):
    • Cleaning
    • Painting
    • Repairs.
  8. Keeps the Chief Engineer, Staff Engineer and duty Engineer promptly and fully informed of all problems, matters of significance and any issues that may compromise the ship’s safety and any deficiencies found in the machinery or equipment.
  9. Must be competent in using the internal communications systems and have good knowledge of the engine room alarms.
  10. Responsible for informing the on-duty Engineer whenever leaving the engine room to perform duties elsewhere.
  11. Keeps supervisors fully informed of the progress of any work undertaken and any defects or problems in their allocated area of responsibility.
  12. Responsible for keeping the engine room and all other machinery areas clean, along with all parts and tools used.
  13. Accountable for ensuring that Company, Public Health, National and International standards are maintained and meeting requirements. Reporting to the Staff Engineer any instances where the ship is unable or fails to comply.
  14. Observes and enforces uniform and grooming standards according to Company policies.
  15. Ensures that other team members are informed and updated on the occurrences during the watch.
  16. Practices good people management, maintaining proper conduct within the Engine department and other departments around the ship.
  17. General engine room and all other duties as assigned by supervisors.
