Position Summary

Maintain the air conditioning plant, refrigeration, ventilation, heating, ice production and all related machinery in good working order.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all ventilation, cooling, freezing equipment, ice making equipment (where applicable) and all air conditioning equipment is kept in full and proper working condition.
  • Ensure that all equipment is always operating at maximum efficiency to reduce energy and fuel cost.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in proper maintenance and repair of all refrigerators, walk-in coolers, cold water drinking fountains, mini bars (with refrigerant gas) and ice making machines.
  • Perform additional routines and work assigned by supervisor.

Reporting Structure

Reporting to the Chief Engineer.

Safety Duties

  • Participates in crew safety drills according to instructions.
  • Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
  • Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
  • Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.
  • Delivering training, guidance and supervision on how to use and maintain them where necessary.

Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • Valid STCW 95 certification.
  • Mechanical Engineer (BSc) or equivalent with specialized study in HVAC/Refrigeration systems.
  • F-Gas Category 1 certification.

Language Requirements

Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.

Computer Knowledge

Good working knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft applications.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Required to stand, walk long distances, reach and sit. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in the Engine Control Room, Engine spaces with noise, light traffic, distracting environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining the equipment records, planned maintenance schedules, repair and work-orders for equipment in the HVAC/Refrigeration area.
  • Maintaining machinery history and repair and maintenance records for the equipment, he is responsible for maintaining. This is accomplished through utilising the AMOS computerised maintenance system.
  • Ensuring that narrative statements in AMOS include dates of repair and maintenance, conditions found, nature of work done, parts used, etc.
  • Responsible for AC compressors, including pipes, pumps and shut off valves in pre-heat water systems.
  • Maintenance and operation of Engine Room ventilation including fire dampers.
  • Maintenance and operation of pumps for AC pre-heat, re-heat (HVAC/Refrigeration section has no other pumps noted in AMOS).
  • Maintaining insulation and seals for doors to provision rooms and walk-in coolers, including latches, hinges and gaskets.
  • Responsible for creating detailed work lists for each member of his team/section, specifying their area of responsibility for maintaining and repairing HVAC/Refrigeration equipment.
  • Making all necessary reports and logs related to the HVAC/Refrigeration section.
  • Maintaining the HVAC/Refrigeration equipment spaces under his control in a clean and safe condition.
  • Providing a handover report to the relieving Refrigeration Engineer with a copy to the Chief Engineer, whenever leaving the vessel for vacation, or any other reason.
  • Reporting to Chief Engineer upon joining the vessel and consulting with the Refrigeration Engineer being relieved, regarding the machinery and equipment for which the Refrigeration Engineer is responsible.
  • Ensuring to read their predecessor’s relief reports when joining the vessel, and to discuss any unusual circumstances in the report with the Chief Engineer.
  • Ensuring, when in capacity of relieving Refrigeration Engineer, that all the publications and records assigned to the custody of the departing 1st Refrigeration Engineer is received before said person leaves the vessel.
  • Coordinating and developing a vacation plan for HVAC/Refrigeration section Officers and crew, in conjunction with the Chief Engineer.
  • To accurately log overtime for HVAC/Refrigeration section crew, and to ensure that Overtime sheets are submitted to the Chief Engineer in a timely manner.
  • Adhering to and ensuring that the HVAC/Refrigeration section Officers and crew adhere to all Company policies and procedures, manuals and directives.
  • Issuing detailed work lists to the Assistant AC Fitter, specifying their responsible maintenance area of machinery and equipment.
  • To train, coach, counsel, support, supervise and delegate to the Assistant AC Fitter.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Engineer, but not limited to the above.
