Academic life at UWC involves a challenging curriculum that allows students to explore a range of subjects while developing their creativity and understanding the importance of activity and service in the community. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is globally recognised and aims to encourage students to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners.
Students attending UWC between the ages of 16 and 19 typically study the IBDP, which is respected by universities worldwide for its balance between breadth and depth of subjects, as well as its focus on service, communication, teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking.
IBDP students take a total of six subjects, one chosen from each of the following groups:
- Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature - Usually the student’s best language, with options for self-taught courses.
- Group 2: Language Acquisition - A second language at an appropriate level.
- Group 3: Individuals and Societies - A subject in the humanities, with options varying by school.
- Group 4: Sciences - A science course from a list of options, including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Group 5: Mathematics - Two options available: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation.
- Group 6: The Arts - Options include Visual Arts, Theatre, Music, and Dance.
Students generally study three subjects at standard level and three at higher level, demonstrating greater knowledge and skills at the higher level. Apart from exams, IB courses involve coursework components that allow students to pursue their own topics of inquiry.
In addition to the six subjects, students complete three core components of the IBDP:
- Extended Essay (EE) - An independent research project of up to 4,000 words.
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK) - A course reflecting on the nature of knowledge.
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) - Engaging in projects that develop social, creative, and outdoor skills.
Once accepted, students can apply to attend other IB programmes available at some UWC schools, such as the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) and the UWC-IB Pilot Programme: Systems Transformation Pathway (STP).
