Play a hands-on role supporting world-class teaching and research through advanced design and manufacturing. Work across diverse disciplines using specialist workshop equipment and modern manufacturing techniques. Part-time (0.8 FTE) appointment on an ongoing basis. Base salary range: $95,231 – $100,643 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the area

College Services provides academic administration and technical support services to the University’s schools, including Heads of School, academic staff and research students. The team is committed to providing effective and efficient services in support of the Schools’ and University’s strategic objectives, with a focus on continuous improvement and best practice. Technical Services provides discipline specific, applied knowledge and skill sets to support UWA’s teaching and research goals in unison with our academic staff. This team of practitioners is focused on high performance outcomes, compliance and contributing to a pragmatic safety culture via the implementation of safe systems of work. The team operates across a broad portfolio including teaching, fieldwork support, laboratory management, instrument/equipment stewardship, research training/design/optimisation and analysis, program coordination, and workshop design, manufacture and repair.

About the opportunity

Provide specialist technical support for teaching and research projects, from concept design through to manufacture and assembly. Work hands-on with a wide range of workshop processes and equipment, including manual machining, CNC machining, welding and fabrication. Train, supervise and support staff and students, promoting safe systems of work and high-quality technical outcomes.

About you

  • A relevant trade qualification or equivalent demonstrated competency (fitting/machining or toolmaking highly regarded).
  • Strong hands-on experience in workshop environments, with broad knowledge of manufacturing processes and practices.
  • Experience using CAD/CAM systems and CNC machining (Fanuc or similar controllers desirable).
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage priorities and collaborate effectively with academic staff, students and technical colleagues.
  • Confidence in teaching and demonstrating practical skills, with a strong commitment to safety and compliance.

Note: Employment checks will include information on gender-based violence, sexual harassment, and related misconduct to meet legal obligations. A current “C” class driver’s licence will be required by the successful applicant. A High-Risk Work Licence(s) is also desirable. There may be some after-hours work required.
