We work in small, fully autonomous teams that have real ownership of their products. We use the best tool for the job and constantly look for better.

We put people first. It’s all about you…

At UW, we prioritise not just what we deliver, but how and with whom we work. Our passion lies in tackling complex challenges alongside bright minds, recognising that true fulfilment comes from overcoming obstacles. By maintaining lightweight processes and fostering autonomy, we ensure swift delivery without compromising quality. Leadership at UW isn’t about lofty ideals but about getting hands dirty, providing guidance, and fostering a culture of support. We champion experimentation, shun egos, and value open discourse, collaboration, and continual learning.

Role

We are looking for someone who will be responsible for the ongoing deployment, maintenance, and support of our Windows VMware and storage infrastructure.

Team

The BTG Workplace Technology Team is responsible for managing and supporting UW’s storage infrastructure. Their primary focus is project-based work, including deploying new storage solutions to enhance system performance and capacity. Additionally, they conduct regular maintenance tasks, such as applying security patches to ensure system integrity and protection.

Beyond project and maintenance work, the team handles fourth-line support escalations from the EUX team, addressing complex technical issues that require advanced troubleshooting. They also actively monitor and support the infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and stability for the storage systems.

What you’ll do and how you will make an impact

As an Infrastructure Engineer, your goal is to:

  • Manage, troubleshoot and deploy infrastructure, specifically focused on the Windows environment but extending to network, product and cloud systems
  • Act as a subject matter expert for technical troubleshooting across our managed systems
  • Assist with incident response and post-incident analysis for the broader operations domain
  • Design and develop automation strategies for ongoing system management and administration, including the use of appropriate automation and configuration management tools
  • Introduce & motivate for improved tooling where required

What you’ll do:

  • Manage and support both on-premise and cloud environments within a technology operations team.
  • Utilise and maintain monitoring, alerting, and service desk systems, following established processes and creating documentation where needed.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical operational issues across Active Directory, Windows, Linux, and networks, with a primary focus on Windows while leveraging knowledge of Linux.
  • Apply a working knowledge of infrastructure as code and automated provisioning & configuration management using tools like Microsoft DSC, Terraform, and Ansible.
  • Strengthen and maintain Active Directory security.
  • Deploy, maintain, and optimise Microsoft RDS for performance and reliability.
  • Manage and configure SCCM and/or Intune for system administration and endpoint management.
  • Deploy, operate, and maintain legacy MS SQL Server, MS-SQL databases, and related services, including stored procedures, SSRS, SISS, and DTSx.
  • Administer and support virtualisation and containerisation technologies such as VMWare and Docker.
  • Work effectively in a remote environment or collaborate with distributed teams.
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell/DSC scripts for production use, ensuring reliability and efficiency.

Your skills & experience

We make use of a number of tools and approaches, but most frequently

  • Autonomous teams making use of common platforms for product development
  • Github, with a strong leaning towards supporting (and release) of open source projects
  • Microsoft DSC
  • Kubernetes & Docker
  • Terraform & Ansible
  • VMWare ESXi/vSAN, Netapp Filers
  • Linux in on-premise clusters and in Cloud (AWS/GCP)

We recognise the power of human connection and so we encourage our teams to come together in person as much as possible. We have fantastic collaborative spaces in London (and access to hotdesk spaces around the world) which we encourage our teams to use on a regular basis.
