Hi! We're UW. We’re on a mission to take the headache out of utilities by providing them all in one place. One bill for energy, broadband, mobile and insurance and a whole lot of savings! We’re aiming to double in size as we help more people to stop wasting time and money. Big ambitions, to be delivered by people like you.

The challenge: For our customers and Partners, UW just needs to work – there when you need it, and invisible when you don’t. Just like flicking a switch. Our proposition to customers is simple, but for our technology teams, the behind-the-scenes complexity is what makes it so interesting.

We put people first. It’s all about you… To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you should be a collaborative leader who can effectively communicate across all levels. You are someone who finds joy in coaching and mentoring others to facilitate their career growth. You have a knack for resolving interpersonal conflicts and fostering a healthy, positive team culture.

We work together. Your team and the people you will work with… You will join the Technology & Product function, specifically within the Engineering family. You will co‑lead a squad alongside a Product Manager, working in a cross‑functional environment with colleagues in UX and data. Your role is to create clarity, consistency, and momentum within your squad while raising the team’s voice to senior leadership. You'll act as a bridge, interacting with stakeholders across the business to provide vital insight and context to your team.

We deliver progress. What you’ll do and how you will make an impact: As a leader at UW, you will balance short‑term delivery with long‑term sustainability to ensure your team does their best work. You will take an integral role in defining team goals and driving prioritisation to achieve them.

  • Technical Strategy: Taking responsibility for technical decisions and ensuring they align with company strategy.
  • Planning & Delivery: Working with Product Managers to set OKRs and co‑leading annual and quarterly planning.
  • Operational Oversight: Leading metrics reviews and ensuring organisation‑wide on‑call coverage.
  • Risk Management: Identifying risks and blockers early and working with stakeholders to mitigate them.
  • People Development: Onboarding, training, and coaching reports, while participating in performance calibration and promotion reviews.
  • Performance Tracking: Measuring team performance and communicating progress against KPIs and milestones.
  • Financial Diligence: Ensuring team expenditures (both OpEx and CapEx) remain in line with budgets.

Your technical toolkit and experience include:

  • Managing a team of engineers within a professional environment.
  • Hands‑on experience with gRPC, GraphQL, Postgres, and Kafka; experience in Go is preferred but not essential.
  • Hands‑on experience with React, TypeScript, React Native.
  • Proficiency with Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling, specifically GitHub Actions and ArgoCD, as well as cloud workflows.
  • A strong understanding of engineering practices and the ability to drive operational excellence.
  • Experience identifying practices for security and SLOs.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: We provide equal opportunities, a diverse and inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone. You are welcome to apply no matter your age, disability, gender, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity status, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation. Please don’t be afraid to ask about what we can do to support your needs. All requests will be carefully and fairly considered.

Background Check: If you are successful and offered a role at UW, you will be subject to a background check. Where checks are unsatisfactory or incomplete and/or a failure to reveal information relating to convictions that you are required to identify as part of the background checks, could lead to withdrawal of an offer of employment.
