A leading highways technology contractor is seeking a Highways Electrician to support installation, maintenance and repair of electrical assets across London’s strategic road network. The role covers traffic systems, street lighting and modern highway technology, working a 50/50 split of days and nights with uplifts taking annual earnings to £50k+. This is a long-term, stable position with opportunities to develop into ITS, traffic signals, and smart-highway technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain and repair electrical highway assets including:
  • Street lighting columns, feeder pillars and distribution equipment
  • Traffic signal infrastructure, detection loops and roadside controllers
  • Highway technology such as CCTV, ANPR, VMS, comms cabinets and power supplies
  • Carry out fault-finding, diagnostics and reactive repairs on live highway networks.
  • Complete safe isolations, electrical testing and certification to BS7671 standards.
  • Support minor civils tasks linked to electrical works (ducting, reinstatement awareness, small excavations).
  • Work safely within TM-controlled environments, following RAMS and sector safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate job sheets, test results and digital documentation.
  • Operate as part of a mobile field team across London and surrounding areas.
  • Essential Requirements

    • 17th or 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (essential).
    • Level 3 Electrical Installations Diploma or equivalent is preferred — but candidates with fewer formal qualifications will be considered if they have strong practical experience.
    • Experience in street lighting, traffic systems, highways electrical work, or industrial/commercial electrical environments.
    • Full UK Driving Licence (essential).
    • Willingness to work days, nights and occasional weekends as part of a rota.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.

    Desirable

    • Understanding of DNO networks, safe isolation and electrical safety.
    • 714/2391/2391-52 Testing & Inspection
    • HESA & HEA certification
    • G39 IPAF / PASMA ECS / CSCS / Gold card
    • Experience with ITS, traffic signals or comms cabinets
