Purpose: Position is responsible for coaching student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition and effectively provide the best possible education for each student-athlete. Position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport. Responsible to Head Coach, Principal and District Athletic/Activities Director.
Classification of Employment: Non-Exempt
Qualifications:
- Teaching certification or ability to obtain Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Rule 10 certification.
- Have fundamental knowledge of the activity.
- Ability to select from a variety of instruction methods to teach sport specific objectives.
- Knowledge of CPR and First Aid is encouraged.
Essential Functions:
- Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Ability to develop drill and practice activities that teach and enhance individual/team skill development that makes up the game.
- Have knowledge of sport rules and strategies.
- Assists in the checking out, maintaining, and checking in equipment.
- Ability to plan and enforce appropriate safety and health rules and regulations.
- Assists in supervision plan that ensures the safety and welfare of students at all times: locker rooms, trips, practices, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality about students and others.
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner.
- Ability to be an effective communicator with all audiences – players, parents, supervisors, peers and spectators.
- Ability to receive, understand and follow directions.
- Be able to model/demonstrate activities and equipment used to develop basic skills or physical condition.
- Ability to observe, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate remediation activities during practice and game conditions for players and team.
- Must know and be able to apply the developmental stages of each point of the game to the needs and ability levels of the team/players.
- Assimilate innovations and adapt to changes when applicable.
- Assist in the teaching of fundamental philosophy for activity or sport.
- Analyze and evaluate sports effectiveness.
- Assistant in providing training rules and expectations and seeing that rules are taught to each participant.
- Take responsibility for public relations with all audiences at all times.
- Support the philosophies of Derby Public Schools and Derby High School activities.
- May be responsible for supervising students on out-of-town activities. This may involve staying overnight and driving a district vehicle.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
- Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged sitting or standing periods.
- Requires the ability to physically and manually move, lift, carry pull or push heavy objects or materials.
- Requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach.
- Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
- Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
- Requires the ability to sit on a bus for extended periods of time.
- Requires the ability to carry and/or provide aid to an injured player.
- Requires the ability to coach in a variety of temperatures, humidity levels, and various weather conditions.
- Must have the ability to handle both emotional and physical stress.
- Must be able to work long and irregular hours.
- Occupationally exposed to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials based on task and procedures required.
- Must be able to lift equipment necessary for their sport.
- Requires the ability to run practice without fatiguing.
- Requires the ability to demonstrate agility drills, stretching exercises, and sport specific activities.
- Swimming and Diving - Able to perform a water rescue.
- Cross Country - Must be able to jog or ride a bike at least five miles.
General Responsibilities:
- Assists in development and maintaining an inventory list of equipment.
- Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
- Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
- Comply with legal and regulatory requirements of the various governmental agencies.
- Perform all duties required by state and federal statutes and by Board of Education policy and action.
- Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal and District Athletic/Activities Director, which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications of the position.
- Maintain proper communication with middle school coaches to ensure a 7-12 philosophy is being implemented in the best way possible for the sport.
