This position’s primary purpose is to assist the Outdoor Recreation (ODR) Manager in administering a comprehensive program for the entire RAF Croughton community, including military personnel, civilian employees, and their families. Following Air Force standards, the program is designed to support mission readiness, community cohesion, and overall well-being.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the management of both Appropriated (APF) and Non-Appropriated (NAF) funds and assets.
  • Acting as the assistant custodian for ODR facilities.
  • Providing guidance and trip leadership for various recreational activities, which involves soliciting volunteers and part-time staff.

Qualifications and Key Skills:

  • Knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts and techniques of Outdoor Recreation activities, sufficient to plan, organize and manage an Outdoor Recreation program.
  • Practical experience of living and working outdoors to provide an enhanced level of instructing, coaching, training and leadership, plus the ability to assess risk and ensure safe practices are followed in accordance with governing standard procedures.
  • Knowledge of local and regional natural resources to provide varied and interesting activity programs, while caring for the environment.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating Outdoor Recreation programs that meet the needs of the community.
  • Ability to work independently and act in the absence of the director, to analyze problems and devise effective solutions to accomplish objectives.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of people and age groups in the Outdoor Recreation area.

Conditions of Employment:

  • You will handle sensitive information in accordance with US and UK laws and are subject to a UK security and criminal records check.
  • This position may be designated as mission essential.
  • You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft, and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training.
  • You will be required to complete a 6-month probationary period and must hold and maintain certification in outdoor emergency first aid, including adult and child CPR, and must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Start and end times may be modified for mission needs, with overtime and work on weekends or public holidays being necessary.
  • Other duties appropriate to the grade may be assigned.
  • You must be willing and able to drive participants. Holding D1 + E driving categories is advantageous, but training can be provided.
  • Failure to obtain required certifications within 12 months may result in separation.
  • You must possess the maturity and judgment to supervise, instruct, and lead participants, including assessing risks and handling emergencies common to outdoor activities.
  • You must be able to instruct all ability levels in kayaking/canoeing and lead activities in British mountains.
  • NGB qualifications in activities like BCU (kayak/canoe), RYA (sailing), and RCI (rock climbing) are advantageous, with desirable skills in mountain biking and archery.
  • The position involves physical exertion, such as leading outdoor activities in various weather conditions and carrying or moving recreation and rescue equipment.

NOTE: You will require a security clearance and a right to work in the UK. This position may have certain restrictions on US citizens including US dual nationals due to the Status of Forces Agreement.
