Overview
We have an exciting opportunity in Belfast, UK for a Graduate Civil Engineer to join our Highways, Active Travel and Infrastructure team.
AECOM is an internationally recognised leader in highway consultancy, providing clients with services including planning, design, project management and asset support. Our award-winning Highways team is at the forefront of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and continues to lead innovative design for ‘smart’ motorways and other major UK infrastructure projects. Our expanding Highways division comprises more than 700 employees across 23 offices in seven countries in Europe. There are many exciting opportunities for graduates to join our UK and Ireland teams, supporting projects across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The Highways team delivers a wide range of projects for funding agencies, national and local governments, highways authorities and private organisations. Our graduates gain exposure to projects from concept through to construction and operation, taking on roles in design, project management, stakeholder engagement, business innovation, and technical/site assurance. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, gaining hands-on experience with industry-leading tools and contributing to projects at all stages — from early feasibility studies through to detailed design, construction support and contract administration.
What we’re looking for
We are seeking ambitious, hardworking and enthusiastic Civil Engineering graduates with strong computational, mathematical and design skills. Successful applicants will use industry-leading software and BIM tools while gaining exposure to key areas such as:
- Transportation economics and planning
- Feasibility and corridor studies
- Environmental assessments
- Highway and streetscape design
- Traffic management planning
- Pavement and drainage design
- Utility relocation
- Vulnerability and security systems
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
Our graduates will also have the opportunity to work across both Traffic Engineering and Highways projects, ensuring broad technical training and varied career development.
Qualifications
- BEng in Civil Engineering, General Engineering, with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above
- MEng in Civil Engineering, General Engineering, with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above would be an advantage
- Highways/Roads modules or experience would be an advantage
- Ability to demonstrate a good technical understanding of Highways Engineering
- Demonstrable interest in Highways Engineering and developing a career in this industry
- Willing and able to work towards chartership with the CIHT, or ICE
- Good Microsoft Office skills essential such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint
- Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing with the confidence to engage with a variety of people (clients, colleagues, stakeholders and sub-contractors alike) and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback
- Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive
- Ability to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole
- Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus
