Join RUSS, a groundbreaking Community Land Trust that delivers mixed tenure, permanently affordable homes in south London. In 2024 we completed 12 Church Grove, the largest community‑led, partially self‑built housing project ever realised in the capital.
What difference will you make? Trustees provide strategic leadership to RUSS, shaping the organization's direction and ensuring it achieves its sustainable housing mission. As a charitable Community Benefit Society (CBS), RUSS is a volunteer‑led mutual governed by its members. Trustees are collectively responsible for the management of the society, ensuring it operates entirely for the benefit of the community while remaining solvent and compliant with both charity and co‑operative law. As volunteer Directors, Trustees also contribute individually around specific tasks where they are able to lead the work of RUSS, working collaboratively with others to achieve this.
What are we looking for?
- Experience: RUSS looks for trustees with diverse backgrounds. This includes life skills or professional expertise in areas such as housing management, finance, law, community engagement, or sustainable architecture.
- Skills: Ability to work collaboratively within a board environment and reach effective agreements for the charity's purpose.
- Commitment: Ability to commit approximately 12 hours per month. This includes meeting preparation, attendance, and sub‑committee activity.
- Values: A strong commitment to socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable neighbourhoods.
What will you be doing? This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who wants to join a high‑profile Community Land Trust. After the success of our first housing project, 12 Church Grove, we are now entering an exciting next chapter, ensuring that our first project is running effectively and searching for new sites to develop our model. New trustees will be central to the strategic leadership of our organisation as we take these next steps, building on and learning from what we have achieved so far.
