We are seeking a skilled and motivated Automation Technician to join our fast-paced, state-of-the-art sortation facility. This role is ideal for someone passionate about automation, control systems, and maintenance reliability. You will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of a highly automated environment, working with equipment such as conveyors, sorters, scanners, PLC-controlled systems, and associated electrical and mechanical components.

Our BaSE Specialists are highly skilled control systems engineers who lead a team within our fully automated facility. This is a key position combining 80% hands-on technical work and 20% administrative responsibility. As a team leader, you will oversee maintenance, automation, and control operations using advanced technologies such as:

  • TIA Portal
  • CCW
  • MoviSuite
  • ProNerta
  • SCADA systems
  • Fibre optic communications

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate a team of engineers and clerks
  • Prioritise maintenance activities and allocate tasks effectively
  • Perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on automation systems
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and control system faults
  • Respond rapidly to breakdowns to minimise operational downtime
  • Maintain and troubleshoot: Conveyors, motors, sensors, VFDs, Scanners and pneumatic systems, PLC-controlled systems (e.g. Siemens, Allen Bradley)
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for system performance
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards
  • Maintain accurate records using CMMS/Maximo systems
  • Support installation and commissioning of new equipment
  • Collaborate closely with operations during peak periods

Requirements

  • Essential HNC/HND in Automation, Robotics, or Control Systems (BSc preferred)
  • Previous team leadership or supervisory experience
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and diagrams
  • Experience in automated environments (warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, or distribution)
  • Strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills
  • Knowledge of conveyors, sorters, motors, sensors, relays, and drives
  • Working knowledge of PLC systems (Siemens, Allen Bradley)
  • Strong understanding of health and safety practices
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and overtime

Desirable

  • Electrical/Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship
  • Experience with CMMS systems (e.g. Maximo)
  • 17th/18th Edition electrical qualification
  • Experience in high-speed logistics or airport baggage systems
