This is a hybrid Duty Solicitor role based in Leek & Cannock with the opportunity to work from home for certain tasks. The Duty Solicitor will advise and represent clients at police stations (Northern Area Custody Facility), Magistrates’ Courts (North Staffordshire Justice Centre & Cannock) and potentially the Crown Court (Stoke on Trent & Stafford) including out-of-hours and emergency matters in line with the duty rota. Daily responsibilities include:

  • Interviewing clients
  • Assessing evidence
  • Preparing case strategies
  • Drafting legal documents
  • Providing clear, timely legal advice

The role also involves liaising with police, prosecutors, courts, and other professionals, as well as maintaining accurate, up-to-date case files and ensuring compliance with legal aid and regulatory requirements. The Duty Solicitor will contribute to team meetings, support less experienced colleagues where appropriate, and uphold the firm’s standards of client care and professional conduct.

Salary: £40,000 - £55,000

Qualifications:

  • Qualified Solicitor with a current Duty Solicitor status (or eligibility to obtain it) and a valid practicing certificate in England & Wales.
  • Strong experience in Criminal Law, including police station and Magistrates’ Court work; experience in Motoring Law is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in client interviewing, evidence review, case analysis, and preparation of legal submissions and advocacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues in straightforward terms.
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure, including out-of-hours duties.
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid environment, with good IT skills for remote work, digital case management, and secure communication.
  • Strong commitment to client care, confidentiality, ethical practice, and equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team, showing sound judgment and a proactive approach.
  • Experience in Legal Aid work and familiarity with relevant regulations and procedures is an advantage.
