Quantity Surveyor / Estimator Salary: £35,000 - £55,000, depending on experience Location: Thornton / Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire Position: Full-time, Permanent If you're building a career in quantity surveying or estimating and want exposure to work that's a little different from standard building projects, this is well worth considering. We're recruiting for an established, engineering contractor in Pembrokeshire that has been operating for more than 40 years. Their work takes them into some of the region's major industrial sites, supporting projects across oil and gas, civil engineering, facilities maintenance and renewable energy. They are now looking for a Quantity Surveyor / Estimator to join the commercial team. Importantly, they aren't fixed on finding someone with 10 or 15 years behind them. An experienced Quantity Surveyor / Estimator who can take ownership from the outset would fit well, but they're equally interested in someone earlier in their career who has the right construction background and wants to develop. That could be an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Junior Quantity Surveyor, Estimator or someone with commercial construction experience who is ready for more responsibility. The company The business has been established since 1983 and operates from its base at Thornton Industrial Estate near Milford Haven. Their work is closely tied to the energy and industrial sectors around Pembrokeshire, with site operations supporting major facilities around the Haven. Alongside their established civil engineering, maintenance and shutdown work, the company has also moved into renewable energy, including large-scale ground-mounted solar projects. That mix is one of the attractions of the position. You won't be boxed into one narrow type of project. The Quantity Surveyor / Estimator will get exposure to both pre-contract and live project commercial work, working alongside the people actually delivering it. What will you be doing? The role sits across estimating and quantity surveying, so you'll be involved from the point an enquiry lands through to the commercial management of the job. You'll review drawings and specifications, prepare estimates and tenders, complete material and labour take-offs and obtain prices from suppliers and subcontractors. Once projects are live, your involvement will continue through site measures, valuations, applications for payment, variations, cost monitoring, subcontract accounts and final accounts. There will be a mixture of office and site-based work, giving you the chance to understand the projects properly rather than working purely from a spreadsheet. Who are they looking for? Some previous exposure to quantity surveying, estimating or the commercial side of construction is important. You'll need a basic understanding of construction costs and commercial processes, and ideally some experience with valuations, applications for payment, variations or site measures. Experience within civil engineering, structural repair, refurbishment, specialist construction, petrochemical work or renewables would be useful, but the company is not looking for someone who ticks every possible box. An HNC, HND or degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction or a related subject would also be useful, but again, the level of the appointment is flexible. For someone more experienced, there is scope to come in and take real responsibility. For someone more junior, this is an opportunity to learn both estimating and quantity surveying within an established contractor, with support as your commercial experience develops. What's on offer? * £35,000 to £55,000 salary, depending on experience * Full-time, permanent position * Genuine opportunity for a junior or developing QS / Estimator * Exposure to civil engineering, industrial, oil & gas and renewable energy projects * A varied role covering both estimating and live project commercial management * Scope to take on more responsibility as your experience grows If you're already working as a Quantity Surveyor / Estimator, or you're at an earlier stage of your commercial career and looking for somewhere you can properly develop, we'd be interested in hearing from you.
