Salary: Lecturer (Level B) – AUD $127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% superannuation. Senior Lecturer (Level C) – AUD $155,403 to $178,290 per annum + 17% superannuation.

Full-time 2-Year Convertible Tenure Track or continuing appointment. Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia.

Role Overview: Join the School of Computer Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW as a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in a Teaching and Research role. In this role, you will contribute to the advancement of research and education in Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, while helping to shape the next generation of AI researchers and practitioners. You will conduct research in areas such as the integration of machine learning and symbolic reasoning to address complex and structured problems, and the development of robust and interpretable AI systems that advance the integration of learning and reasoning paradigms, contributing to high-impact research outcomes and the School’s growing research profile.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching and support student learning across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Conduct research in Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, integrating machine learning and symbolic reasoning, and publish in high-impact venues.
  • Participate in curriculum development, grant writing, and supervise doctoral and postgraduate research projects.

About You: You are an emerging or established academic with a strong foundation in Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, with the ability to contribute to high-quality research and teaching. You bring expertise in areas such as machine learning and symbolic reasoning integration, knowledge representation, reasoning under uncertainty, and interpretable AI, and demonstrate the potential to build a strong research profile.

At Lecturer level (Level B), you will be developing your research profile and contributing to collaborative research activities, including competitive grant applications and scholarly publications, while also delivering high-quality teaching and supporting student learning across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. At Senior Lecturer level (Level C), you will demonstrate an established research track record with evidence of research leadership, success in securing competitive funding, supervising HDR students, and making significant independent contributions to your field. You will also contribute to educational leadership through high-quality teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring students and colleagues.

Skills & Experience:

  • Lecturer (Level B): A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience. Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence. Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning (desirable). Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Senior Lecturer (Level C): A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience. Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others. Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement. Demonstrated experience with industry or work-integrated learning. Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives. Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership. Experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high calibre students. Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships. Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills. Demonstrated ability to interact with the profession and industry and attract funding for learning and teaching initiatives. An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines. Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
