Research Associate – Chemistry
Join UNSW as a Research Associate focused on analytical chemistry of polymer‑coated magnetic nanoparticles for diagnostic and theranostic applications. The role is located in Sydney, Australia.
Job Details
- Salary: AU$113,000 – AU$121,000 plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading.
- Term: Fixed‑term, 12 months.
- Hours: Full‑time, 35 hours per week.
- Location: Sydney, Australia.
- Reporting to Professor Richard Tilley; no direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and conduct analytical chemistry work on polymer‑coated magnetic nanoparticles for MRI, magnetic particle imaging, and targeted drug delivery.
- Synthesize and characterise polymer‑coated magnetic nanoparticles, including chromatography separation of degradation by‑products.
- Perform surface analysis, TEM, magnetic measurements, and other characterisation techniques.
- Maintain detailed laboratory notebooks and write results suitable for peer‑reviewed publication.
- Prepare scientific papers, progress reports, and presentations for national and international conferences.
- Assist in writing research proposals to funding bodies and pursue industry collaborations.
- Support coordination of research activities and training of PhD and honours students.
- Demonstrate UNSW values, health and safety compliance, and the university Code of Conduct.
Selection Criteria – Successful Applicant
- PhD in analytical chemistry, polymer chemistry or nanomaterials (specialised in analytical chemistry or chemical synthesis of polymers and nanoparticles).
- Proven experience in characterization of polymers, nanoparticles and bioproducts.
- Strong background in materials synthesis.
- Track record of high‑quality academic research with independent work.
- Published work and conference presentations.
- Experience training PhD and honours students.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to staying current with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities.
- Alignment with UNSW’s values and policies.
