The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 170 academic, research and professional staff. In 2025, the school obtained $22M in research funding, produced over 800 scientific publications and is frequently rated among the top schools across UNSW in student experience surveys. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the fields of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science and Oceanography.

The Senior Lecturer will contribute to high-quality research, teaching, and research student supervision in the field of palaeobiology, focusing on understanding the behaviour, ecology, and evolution of extinct species through the fossil record. This role will be expected to lead innovative research that integrates fieldwork, comparative anatomy, 3D imaging, and biomechanical modelling to uncover new fossil species and reconstruct their life histories.

About The Role

  • Level C ($155k - $178k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Continuing Part-time (7 hours per week)

Specific Responsibilities For This Role Include

  • Conduct original and innovative research in palaeobiology and related disciplines, independently and collaboratively, and create a nationally recognised research track record.
  • Publish in high-ranking journals, provide reports to funding bodies, and engage in public communication of research outcomes.
  • Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s at national level.
  • Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants and research end-users as a member or leader.
  • Establish and grow research groups, participate in major collaborations, and contribute to the commercialisation of research outcomes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including government, museums, industry, research centres, and universities.
  • Mentor and guide students, groups, and colleagues; supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor; and contribute to HDR review panels.
  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and critically reflective practice to inspire student learning.
  • Design, develop and deliver high-quality learning activities, assessments and feedback across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Provide leadership at School and University levels, including School meetings, open days, and strategic planning.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university.

About The Successful Applicant (Selection Criteria)

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Significant track record in research leadership with outcomes of high quality and high international impact.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry.
  • Excellent record of recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches.
  • Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
