Role Description

The Postdoctoral Fellow will investigate future changes in evapotranspiration across southeastern Australia and examine how current hydrologic modelling platforms, that use Potential Evapotranspiration as an input, reproduce observations of evapotranspiration. The role will work with state‑of‑the‑art regional climate model and ecohydrologic model outputs to inform better process representation in conceptual hydrologic models. The Fellow will also provide operational advice to the project’s government partner.

Compensation & Term

• Level A ($113k – $121k) plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed term – 1 year
• Full‑time (35 hours per week)

Specific Responsibilities

• Contribute independently or as a team member in collaborative research to enhance the quality of research outcomes.
• Conduct research to produce scholarly outputs and operational advice for water managers.
• Undertake specific research projects under the guidance of a research leader, contributing to research activity development.
• Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets.
• Undertake discipline‑appropriate research activities, e.g., literature review, data analysis, and modelling using appropriate methods.
• Participate in and/or present at conferences and workshops relevant to the project as required.
• Regularly present updates to the UNSW supervisor and NSW DCCEEW experts.
• Lead the preparation of a report describing the research and its outcomes to NSW DCCEEW.
• Document all modelling and data analysis in line with reproducible research principles.
• Provide usable outputs to NSW DCCEEW and advice for operationalising methods.
• Align with and actively demonstrate UNSW’s Code of Conduct and Values.
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take reasonable care to not impact the health and safety of yourself or others.

Qualifications & Selection Criteria

• PhD in hydrology, ecosystem modelling, or a related discipline.
• Proven commitment to staying up‑to‑date with disciplinary knowledge and developments.
• Demonstrated ability to undertake high‑quality academic research and work independently.
• Track record of publications and conference presentations relevant to the opportunity.
• Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
• Highly developed interpersonal skills.
• Ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
• Understanding and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
