This job is based in Australia. The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia, recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. It offers world-class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research programme with over 120 students. 40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology. UNSW Psychology is the only School in the southern hemisphere ranked in the top 30 by discipline in the THES, QS and ARWU rankings. The School has well-equipped research and teaching facilities and attracts outstanding staff and students from Australia and overseas. UNSW is located 5 km from the centre of Sydney and is close to other research centres, teaching hospitals, transport, shopping, and beaches.

The Lecturer (Level B) / Senior Lecturer (Level C) is expected to carry out activities to develop their scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally and to contribute significantly to achieving the teaching and service missions of the School and Faculty. International visa sponsorship is possible for the right candidate. There are 5 roles currently being advertised by UNSW Psychology. You will be considered across ALL of the 5 roles as appropriate, so only one application is required.

About The Role

  • LEVEL B – $127k - $150k / LEVEL C – $155k – 178k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years Convertible Tenure Track (CTT)
  • Full time (35 hours)

LEVEL B: Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
  • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and research methods in line with UNSW policy.
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources, and provide assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning statistics and research methods with the support of more senior academics.
  • Support learning progression with students as individuals and as a cohort to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
  • Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance.
  • Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant).
  • Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required.
  • Engage in individual and/or collaborative research in psychology in a manner consistent with disciplinary practice.
  • Create scholarly impact which is recognised by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge in psychology.
  • Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team and design research projects in psychology.
  • Contribute to the development of applications for competitive funding under the guidance of senior colleagues.
  • Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through involvement in supervision of HDRs.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university.

LEVEL C: (in addition to the above)

  • Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning in the areas of statistics and research methods.
  • Maintain and develop links within the discipline industry and profession.
  • Work collaboratively to identify and apply for internal education funding opportunities.
  • Undertake independent research and make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in psychology.
  • Develop research groups in area of specialist expertise and research methods that are appropriate to the discipline.
  • Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s at national level.
  • Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants and research end-users.

About The Successful Applicant – Selection Criteria

LEVEL B:

  • A PhD in a related discipline.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery in statistics and research methods at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning (desirable).
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact.
  • A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

LEVEL C:

  • Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience with industry or work-integrated learning.
  • Experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high calibre students.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the profession and industry and attract funding for learning and teaching initiatives.
