UNSW Rural brings world-class medical education to rural and regional Australia, delivering the full 6-year medical course at our rural campuses. Face-to-face teaching is critical to rural program delivery as students build relationships with clinicians and become part of the local medical community. The program has supported RHMT aims for over 25 years, delivering excellence in rural medical education and student experience.
Details of the role
Education Focused (EF) roles enable academics to specialise in education and devote time to high-quality teaching and initiatives to enhance the educational experience of students. Appointees are expected to drive educational excellence within the universityโs teaching and learning communities.
The role of Lecturer, Rural will focus on high-quality teaching with an interest in local rural medical education, health issues and related projects. The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate medical education program with emphasis on applying Basic Sciences in Clinical Medicine and/or Multidisciplinary Care and Clinical Skills Techniques to deliver comprehensive patient care in multidisciplinary environments.
The position reports to the Director of Medical Education at the identified campus and has no direct reports.
Some Key Skills Required
- A BMed/MD, MBBS and a Fellowship of a Specialist Medical College and eligibility for medical registration in New South Wales, or a qualification in a relevant health discipline with current registration with AHPRA.
- Demonstrate a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning and engagement with the local rural medical environment.
- Prepare and deliver rurally focused content in lectures, tutorials and small group teaching; assess learning, mark, examine and pursue innovative learning activities for basic sciences, clinical coursework and skills development.
- Support student learning progression in clinical skills, provide guidance on multidisciplinary teams to improve patient and health professional outcomes, and assess learner achievement.
- Develop and pursue local research initiatives with LHD and primary health care networks; supervise Independent Learning Projects (ILP) as appropriate.
- Collaborate with peers across Rural Clinical Campuses and Faculty to build productive relationships and partnerships.
- Support recruitment of rural students in the Rural Entry Admissions Pathway (REAP), including interview training and participation in rural campus interviews.
- Proven track record in practical teaching and supervision at undergraduate level with commitment to rural medical and health education.
- Experience in large and small group teaching and applying teaching methods in health education including online delivery and educational technologies.
- Strong communication and organisational skills; ability to network with a diverse range of students and staff in a team environment.
