Employment Type: Part Time, 14 hours per week. The preferred candidate is able to negotiate a separate clinical appointment with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, which may include a position at Prince of Wales Hospital as either a fractional Staff Specialist or a Visiting Medical Officer.
Duration: Continuing
Remuneration: Academic Level D $185K-$204K pro rata or Academic Level E $237,784 pro rata based on experience + 17% super + Annual leave loading
Location: Randwick, Sydney NSW

Why this role matters
The Associate Professor / Professor (Level D or Level E) in Surgery will provide academic leadership and foster excellence in innovative teaching, research, and engagement within the discipline. Based at the Randwick Clinical Campus of the School of Clinical Medicine (SoCM), the role will work collaboratively across all SoCM clinical campuses and with the South-Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) to integrate teaching, research, and clinical care.
The position is responsible for driving high‑quality surgical education, leading original and impactful research, and contributing to curriculum design and delivery in alignment with UNSW’s academic standards. The role will mentor staff and students, supervise Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates, and contribute to governance through active participation in committees and leadership groups.
At Level D , the focus is on academic leadership within teaching and research, building national recognition, and developing strong collaborations to advance the discipline. At Level E , the role extends to providing strategic leadership in the scholarship of learning and teaching, fostering a culture of educational excellence, driving significant research of international standing, and maintaining extensive national and international partnerships that enhance curriculum, student outcomes, and professional engagement.
This position requires a leader who can inspire, collaborate, and innovate across teaching, research, and engagement, and who is committed to advancing UNSW’s values, research reputation, and educational mission within the Australian and international surgical community.
Skills Required
At Level D

  • Medical qualification registrable in New South Wales, specialist training in a surgical discipline and have a fellowship of the Royal of Australasian College of Surgeon or equivalent.
  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline area is desirable as is an outstanding research record, including significant external research funding and publications in top tier peer-reviewed journals.
  • A record of leadership and achievement in a managerial role in a university or similar professional or clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated capacity to successfully lead and manage complex organisational change in clinical, research and education settings, including high-level skills in leadership, analysis, liaison, negotiation, and conflict resolution involving multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Clinical subspecialty knowledge and expertise which complements and extends current clinical services available in Surgery.
  • Demonstrated capacity to deliver quality improvement activities.
  • Successful interaction with relevant professional organisations and/or evidence of involvement in broader health system management.

At Level E (in Addition To The Above)

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Evidence of achievement in leading innovation, driving educational strategic initiatives and delivering exceptional student outcomes at all levels of study.
  • Demonstrated experience as a leader and recognised authority as an educational leader with a breadth of disciplinary expertise.
  • Demonstrated substantial experience of course, program and curriculum development at all professional levels.
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of a range of pedagogical approaches with the skill, experience and creativity to innovate and develop further.
  • Proven leadership of research projects and teams, including high quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research projects.
  • Demonstrated capacity to attract internal and external funding to support educational or research initiatives.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work and influence across disciplines, faculties, institutions, industry and professional accreditation bodies.
  • Evidence of being an inspirational role model for other academics seeking mentoring, guidance, advice and support in educational activities.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policy and programs as they relate to staff and students
