This is a teaching and research role within the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW.
The Opportunity: Join the School of Computer Science and Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW as an Associate Professor in a Teaching and Research role. As an Associate Professor, you will be a senior academic leader contributing to and shaping the strategic direction of research and education in Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence. You will drive high-impact research with national and international visibility across areas such as the integration of machine learning and symbolic reasoning to address complex problems, including knowledge representation, reasoning systems, and hybrid AI architectures, while advancing the School’s research profile, industry engagement, and educational excellence.

About You: You are an established academic with a strong and sustained track record of high-impact research in Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, with growing national or international reputation. You bring expertise in areas such as neural and symbolic integration, reasoning under uncertainty, knowledge representation, and interpretable AI applied to complex domains, and you can translate research into real-world impact.
With a proven ability to secure competitive research funding, lead research initiatives, and supervise higher degree research students to completion, you are an engaging educator with experience delivering high-quality teaching and contributing to curriculum development. As a senior academic, you will demonstrate leadership within your discipline, contribute to strategic initiatives, academic governance, or program development, and build partnerships across academia and industry.
Qualifications & Skills: A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience. Commitment to staying up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Experience in teaching and learning design using diverse pedagogical approaches, including development and delivery of courses/programs at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. Experience implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and a commitment to educational excellence. Experience with industry or work-integrated learning. Professional development of teaching practice with ability to lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching. Experience initiating curriculum development and improvement. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and contribute to equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Significant track record in research leadership with high-quality, high-impact international outcomes and ongoing research leadership. Strong record of recruiting and supervising high-calibre students. Demonstrated leadership in building engagement and partnerships with the profession and industry. Understanding of UNSW’s aims, objectives, values, policies and guidelines. Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to relevant training.
