The University of York is seeking to recruit a skilled and motivated part qualified Management Accountant looking for a challenging and rewarding role in a prestigious, complex organisation. Working in the Management Accounting Service team this is a full-time role on an open contract, based in the Finance Department.

The Management Accountant role provides essential specialist financial support for delivering an effective financial and management accounting service. You will perform monthly management accounting and detailed work on financial systems to produce high-quality financial information for the University of York. You will also contribute to producing accurate financial planning and communicating performance against forecasts. By fostering positive relationships between the finance team and university departments, you will support informed decision-making and effective financial management.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work flexibly across Management Accounting under the direction of senior finance staff, providing support across key Management Accounting activities.
  • Act as the primary financial expert, performing monthly management accounting and supporting financial planning.
  • Effectively communicate financial performance through reporting and analysis.
  • Support financial management and decision making.
  • Support and facilitate accurate financial planning in collaboration with key stakeholders and finance business partners.
  • Ensure timely information, insight and communication.
  • Provide transactional support, processing financial adjustments within the accounting system.
  • Conduct technical accounting work to aid in the preparation of medium-term budgets.
  • Support with financial analysis and technical expertise for projects, business planning, and capital funding processes.
  • Manage the work of Accounting Assistants, ensuring effective performance and role clarity.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Qualifications: AAT qualified or CCAB/CIMA part qualified
  • Experience: Experienced in the preparation of Management Accounts and financial planning
  • Skills: A high degree of attention to detail, a solution-oriented approach, and the ability to gather, analyse, interpret, and report complex data/information.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of accounting practices and procedures used in large, complex organisations.
