• To be responsible for designing and developing learning materials and will make a significant contribution to lectures, practical teaching and the assessment for medical students.

University of Worcester, Three Counties Medical School (TCMS) is seeking a committed and enthusiastic Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science, preferably with expertise in cell biology, microbiology and/or biochemistry, to support the delivery of our graduate entry MBChB programme. Opened in September 2023, TCMS was established to widen access to medical careers and help develop and retain a skilled local medical workforce. Our MBChB curriculum is built around problem based learning (PBL), applied learning including simulation, and a strong emphasis on early patient contact.

• To be responsible for the development, organisation and supervision of the learning of Biomedical Science (with an emphasis on cell biology, microbiology and / or biochemistry) to medical students on the graduate entry 4-year MBChB programme.
• To contribute to the delivery of a high-quality student experience for medical students, working with the Phase Leads to ensure the MBChB programme is supported in respect of relevant disciplines.
• In consultation with MBChB Phase Leads, to design and produce learning resources in Biomedical sciences, maximising the use of technology, and demonstrating appropriate and innovative pedagogic approaches to support learning.
• To make a significant contribution to the delivery of sessions including practical teaching and assessments in line with the GMC outcomes for graduates.
• To work with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the Medical School and wider College of Health, Life and Environmental Science for delivery of biomedical sciences and to ensure that interdisciplinary learning is embedded within the Medical School.
• To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurance procedures.
• To take part in the day-to-day management of teaching and learning and to support the continued development of biomedical science within the MBChB curriculum.
• To engage in scholarship, disseminating findings through conference presentations and journal articles, books, book chapters and other forms appropriate to the discipline.
• To supervise doctoral students in their discipline.
• To participate in the facilitation of problem-based learning (PBL) as required.
• To act as a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) as required.
• To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the School and College.
• To participate in the recruitment of students, including selection events and open days.
• To participate fully in the life of the school and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Dean of School or their nominee.
• Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.
• Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and well-being and that of other staff and students.

• A first degree in Biomedical Science or a closely related subject area.
• A PhD (or, for Lecturer, near completion) in Biomedical Science or a closely related discipline and / or appropriate relevant experience.
• Essential for Senior Lecturer level: PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent qualification) and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) / Advance HE* / or relevant appropriate experience.

• Experience of teaching on Biomedical / Medical Science degree programmes at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
• For Senior Lecturer level: significant experience of teaching Biomedical / Medical Sciences.
• Experience of doctoral supervision.

• Expertise in Biomedical / Medical science, and experience of teaching across a wide range of biomedical / biological areas.
• Excellent knowledge of human / medical biology and biomedical science (with an emphasis on cell biology, microbiology and / or biochemistry).
• Demonstrable ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning using a variety of methods of learning and teaching, including the ability to use technology creatively and appropriately to enhance learning experiences.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, lecturers, managers, representatives of external organisations and the public, both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to health and well‑being issues in both staff and students.
• Evidence of contributing to both student recruitment and support activities (or willingness to do so).
• Current scholarly / research activity in the field of Biomedical Science and/or medical education.
• For Senior Lecturer level: Track record of scholarly / research activity related to the field and / or medical education, producing excellent outputs in this area.
• Knowledge and skills, and / or experience of teaching medical students or other graduate entry degree students, and able to articulate the different characteristics of medical students and the pedagogical approaches required to teach them successfully.
• Awareness of the requirements of the GMC.
• Knowledge and experience of working in collaboration with colleagues in NHS; awareness of national strategic and policy developments in Higher Education; and active membership of professional networks and associations in related fields.
