We are seeking to appoint a Medical Education Facilitator for Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and/or Integrated Clinical Methods, to support the on-going delivery of the graduate entry MBChB programme within the Three Counties Medical School (TCMS) at the University of Worcester. The Schools MBChB curriculum is centred around problem-based learning (PBL), applied learning (e.g. simulation), with an emphasis on early patient contact and clinical placements. Founded with the aim of widening access to careers in medicine and retaining graduates in the local area, the school opened to students in September 2023.
Main duties of the job
Applicants will have a keen interest in medical education and training, with good interpersonal skills to support the development of self-directed learners. PBL facilitators will also act as personal academic tutor for the students in their group. Integrated Clinical Methods is a small group method to develop communication and clinical skills and you will have expertise in developing consultation skills. Working with the lead for PBL or clinical skills you will be involved in designing and developing cases and support materials for small group work and assessment items.
About us
Ideally you will already have experience of teaching medical students or similar. However, key to the role is an interest in developing as a medical educator and the ability to work flexibly with the rest of the team to meet the needs of the MBChB curriculum. There are also opportunities for professional development.
We have 2 part time posts available based at the Severn campus, requiring availability on either both Mondays AND Fridays or Tuesdays AND Thursdays.
Job responsibilities
1. To provide Problem-based Learning (PBL) Facilitation and / or Integrated Clinical Methods Facilitation (ICM - clinical communication skills and basic physical examination techniques) within small group facilitation in person and / or online if required.
2. To use the appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.
3. To assess the progress of students both formatively and summatively, with reference to the assessment criteria and provide constructive and timely feedback to students.
4. To undertake the necessary preparation for facilitating the learning sessions, including introductory training, and reading of documentation (Facilitators Notes).
5. To contribute to PBL / ICM scenario refreshment, simulated patient (SP) training, and the tutor notes.
6. To provide student guidance, mentorship, and pastoral support as a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) (if taking on a PBL Facilitator role).
7. To contribute to the quality assurance processes and the evaluation of the MBChB programme.
8. To attend pertinent staff development and in house training activities as required by the role including PAT and take part in peer teaching observation and dialogue.
9. To engage in scholarly practice.
10. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.
11. Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and well-being and that of other staff and students.
12. Carry out these duties in a manner that promotes equality of opportunity and supports diversity and inclusion and takes into account the University\'s commitment to environmentally sustainable ways of working.

Experience
- In-depth knowledge, experience, and expertise in an appropriate medical / healthcare or scientific discipline to enable the successful facilitation of PBL / ICM groups with medical students.
- Experience of giving constructive, formative feedback to others in the workplace, (ideally providing feedback to students).
- Evidence of continuing professional development, and commitment to engage in scholarly activity.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of contemporary teaching methods, preferably PBL and / or small group teaching, facilitation, and critical appraisal.
- Understanding of the pastoral and academic support requirements of medical students (ideally some experience of providing such support).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of different audiences.
- Ability to facilitate student learning using nondidactic techniques including those relevant to clinical and communication skills.
- Demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion and to the health and wellbeing of staff and students.
- Good IT skills and working knowledge of MS Word packages.
- A commitment to medical education and developing future doctors.
Qualifications
- Registration with the GMC, NMC, HCPC (or another relevant clinical discipline).
- A good first degree (Level 6) in a relevant discipline.
- Post Graduate Qualification in Medical Education or equivalent such as PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in HE and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA)* or working towards.
