Applications are invited for a full-time Senior Research Technician position to work with Dr Mojgan Rabiey at the School of Life Sciences (Gibbet Hill Campus and Stratford Innovation Campus), University of Warwick. The successful candidate will work on a 1-year project aimed at studying bacteriophage-bacteria-plant interaction.

The candidate will join the Dr Mojgan Rabiey Group. The approaches to be employed will be the establishment of a robust system that underpins a detailed examination of phage-bacteria interaction in planta. This will involve:

  • Genetic manipulation of phages and bacteria by fluorescence labelling to track their movement in planta
  • Gene knock out to understand gene’s function in phage-bacteria-plant interaction
  • Confocal microscopy to visualise phages and bacteria in planta
  • Genetic screens to identify key genes underpinning infection

These approaches will significantly enhance our understanding of using phage as biocontrol of crop diseases.

The candidate will be expected to:

  • Design, execute and analyse field and laboratory experiments
  • Have expertise in experimental design and statistical analyses
  • Isolate phages and pathogenic bacteria from environmental samples
  • Carry out genetic analysis and genetic manipulation of phages and bacteria and gene knock out
  • Use confocal microscopy
  • Use plants and trees for pathogenicity tests and host resistance assays
  • Prepare the results for and contribute to high quality academic publications
  • Present at national and international academic conferences
  • Engage in public engagement activities

Furthermore, the candidate will be expected to play a central role in working with other research group members.

We particularly welcome applications from female candidates, as they are underrepresented within the Department at this level.
