About the Role

This is an opportunity to join the Safe Autonomy Research Group at WMG, University of Warwick, and contribute to high-impact research that is shaping how automated systems are designed, assessed and deployed across automotive, maritime and aviation domains, including remote operation setups. The role offers a distinctive combination of fundamental and applied research: you will design and run empirical studies on human-automation interaction, investigate human factors concepts such as trust, situational awareness and workload, and help develop practical human-machine interaction solutions with real-world relevance. You will work with leading academic and industrial partners through projects funded by Horizon Europe, UKRI/Innovate UK and CCAV, with opportunities to publish high-quality research, influence industrial practice and standards, and contribute to a growing international research profile. The role also offers scope to support project leadership, mentor junior colleagues and help shape future research proposals in a highly collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run empirical studies on human-automation interaction.
  • Investigate human factors concepts such as trust, situational awareness and workload.
  • Help develop practical human-machine interaction solutions with real-world relevance.
  • Collaborate with academic and industrial partners on projects funded by Horizon Europe, UKRI/Innovate UK and CCAV.
  • Publish research and influence industrial practice, standards and policy.
  • Support project leadership and mentor junior colleagues.
  • Contribute to future research proposals.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant discipline such as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive Engineering or Human Factors, or close to completion.
  • Experience designing and delivering empirical research studies, including experimental design, data collection and analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of human-automation interaction, with particular interest or experience in human factors.
  • Clear understanding of current challenges in the design and evaluation of automated systems.
  • Evidence of high-quality research output.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Organised, proactive and capable of delivering work to tight deadlines.
  • Capability to engage confidently with academic and industrial stakeholders.

PhD Status

For applicants who are near submission of their PhD or have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made at Research Assistant level, at the highest point of pay grade 5 (£34,610 per annum). Upon receipt of evidence confirming the successful award of the PhD, the candidate will be promoted to Research Fellow, at the lowest point of grade 6 (£35,608 per annum).
