About The Role

Warwick Medical School seeks to appoint an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in General Practice or Obstetrics and Gynaecology, based at the University of Warwick. We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual wishing to excel in both their clinical and academic training, with the ambition to join the next generation of leading clinical academics.

You will spend 50% of your time undertaking specialist clinical training (O&G) or practice (GP) and 50% undertaking research or education/training. Alongside clinical training/practice you will develop a post-doctoral research programme which integrates into the interests of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology research group, or Primary Care research within Warwick Medical School. You will be encouraged to develop an application for a postdoctoral fellowship and project grants. Successful exit from the programme will leave you well-placed to apply for competitive research fellowships, academic senior lectureships and to continue to work in the global health research community. You will be employed by the University of Warwick and hold an Honorary Contract with a regional NHS trust at the discretion of the training programme director, to suit your clinical training within the West Midlands deanery, for example University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) or University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW). GP candidates will have completed their clinical training, and will combine academic training with clinical service as a salaried or self-employed GP.

You will have submitted your PhD/MD at the time you apply and will provide evidence that you have been fully awarded your degree by the time you take up the post.

Contract duration: 4 years (to a maximum of 4 years total funding). Funding is available for 1 post. The salary will be at the clinical scale, depending on qualifications and experience. Note that NIHR funds GP CL posts at a maximum equivalent to the top of the pre-2003 consultant contract pay scale. The successful applicant must be in post by 1 September 2026.

About You

Applicants should be medically qualified, ST3 and above (O&G) or have obtained CCT (GP), have full GMC registration and already hold, or have submitted for Higher Degree (PhD/DPhil/MD).

You will have evidence of academic achievement, with publications in your field, and will already hold an NTN, having undertaken some training at Specialty Registrar level (O&G).

The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career, and in particular those who have already undertaken research and who now wish to continue undertaking research whilst pursuing further training.

This cross-disciplinary approach has and continues to build a strong pipeline of ideas and collaborative projects that are competitive for external funding. There is a strong focus on Team Science approach to address national and global challenges. Our vibrant research programmes are supported by strong platforms across the University and wider NHS/NIHR enabling interdisciplinary research such as NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West Midlands; NIHR Coventry Health Determinants Research Collaboration; and Warwick Global Health. Our focus is on Population and Health Data Science, Health Technology Innovation, Multiple Long Term Conditions, Inequalities in Health Care, and Global Health. Senior clinical academics include Professor Paramjit Gill, Professor Frances Griffiths, and Dr Rachel Spencer.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

This is an opportunity to be part of the Tommy’s National Centre for Miscarriage research and The Centre for Early Life in which we excel in translational research into implantation and miscarriage (Brosens/Quenby), preterm labour (Blanks/Quenby), endometriosis (Greaves) and embryology (Hartshorne/MacAinsh). We have large collections of clinical samples and associated metadata in the Tommy’s Reproductive Health Biobank and the Tommy’s Net cohort multiple randomised controlled trial platform both of which are available to facilitate the appointee’s research. Clinical training will be UHCW, a busy tertiary referral teaching hospital with training available in all sub-specialities of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
