About the Role

This opportunity sits within the Group Accounting Team which is the centre of excellence within the Finance Office reporting on the University as a whole, across all areas of its activity: from Academic departments to Administration and Commercial activities. The team is responsible for external financial reporting for the University, including the consolidated Financial Statements, the Annual Financial Return to the OfS (Office for Students) and specific reporting to other funding bodies (non‑research). It is also responsible for co‑ordinating the financial planning process and the quarterly management reporting of the University's financial performance.

We are looking for an experienced qualified accountant with a good honours degree; a pro‑active individual with good Excel skills and excellent technical knowledge; well organised with the ability to meet strict reporting deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of the year‑end statutory accounts and selected disclosures.
  • Research relevant technical accounting changes, providing guidance to finance colleagues on specific accounting updates and ad‑hoc queries.
  • Develop and maintain innovative financial solutions and models to aid planning, control, decision‑making and dissemination of best practice.
  • Involved with completion, consolidation and analysis of quarterly management accounts and financial plans, including summary reporting work.
  • Prepare committee papers and supporting analysis.
  • Prepare statutory government financial returns (e.g. OfS and HESA) and review related returns from other departments.
  • Provide accurate and timely management information to senior University management across academic departments, commercial activities and other ad‑hoc tasks.

Qualifications

You will have good Excel and data analysis skills, allied with a thorough knowledge of UK GAAP, and be able to provide financial advice and information to finance and non‑finance colleagues from a wide variety of departments on all aspects of financial reporting, and best practice in all financial matters.

A £5,000 per annum market supplement (pro‑rated and non‑pensionable) is available for the successful applicant on provision of proof of current membership of an approved accounting body and evidence they hold the appropriate accountancy qualifications.

About the Department

The University Finance Office supports business planning and innovation to maximise the financial resources available to the University and create the long‑term sustainable financial platform required for future growth. Finance staff across the University are networked as a professional community of expertise. You will be supported to continue your professional journey through access to Continuing Professional Development training opportunities, sector networks and regular Finance Office briefings.

The role is campus based; staff can opt to work under the Finance Office's current hybrid policy where a maximum of 40% of time (2 days per week for full‑time staff, typically Tuesday and Friday) can be worked remotely. This is subject to review and operational requirements. Whilst in the induction phase you'll be required to work 100% in the office. Further details are available on request or at interview stage.
