The Department of History seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Early Modern British History on a full-time and indefinite basis from 1 September 2026. You will be part of one of the largest History departments in the UK, with a thriving community of teachers and researchers across disciplines and geographical areas.

About You

You will have expertise in Early Modern British History fitting in with at least one of the University of Warwick’s interdisciplinary research spotlights. You need to be able to demonstrate how your research in Early Modern British History is fresh and exciting and complements existing University, faculty and departmental research strategies. The thematic focus of the post is open. We would especially welcome candidates whose work engages with religious change and/or social relations.

The History department has others researching and teaching in Early Modern History and an Early Modern and Eighteenth-Century Centre as well as a range of related networks. Applicants should indicate in their covering letter how their research expertise interfaces with existing research specialisms in the department. There are opportunities to develop connections and collaborations with colleagues in other departments, especially through the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance and the English Department. We are particularly keen to see applications from backgrounds currently underrepresented in UK higher education.

Requirements

It is envisaged that you may teach on some of the modules listed below, depending on the successful candidate’s knowledge and expertise and department requirements:

  • HI113 Europe in the Making
  • HI275 The British Problem

In addition, you will be encouraged to propose your own modules depending on your expertise and research interests. You will also be expected to supervise final-year dissertations and contribute to MA teaching. You will undertake lecturing, seminar teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of undergraduate work and monitoring of student attendance in accordance with the Department’s quality assurance practices. You will also act as personal tutor to an assigned group of undergraduate students, providing pastoral support and guidance during the academic year. You will be actively engaged in research in Early Modern British History or a related field. We welcome applications from early career researchers from all sections of the community from around the globe. Please note that the PhD must be awarded by the job start date of 1 September 2026.

The Department

The Warwick University History Department is one of the largest history departments in the UK, with teaching and research notable for its disciplinary range and geographical scope. The Department comprises ~50 academic staff, 5 postdoctoral staff, 13 support staff, ~1,000 undergraduate students, and ~80 postgraduate students. It has a strong international reputation and consistently high rankings in UK and international surveys. In REF 2021, 92% of research was ranked world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). It is home to six research centres: Global History and Culture Centre; Centre for the History of Medicine, Science and Technology; European History Centre; Early Modern and Eighteenth Century Centre; Centre for Global Jewish Studies; Centre for Caribbean Studies. We also engage with the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance as a Faculty of Arts research centre. All staff have access to an annual Individual Research Account (currently ÂŁ750) to support research. You will be eligible to apply for faculty and university funding to support teaching and research initiatives, and you will be assigned a mentor from among permanent staff to support your professional development.
